Description I've been having terrible insomnia this week. I haven't had a full night's sleep in the past 3 days. I'm exhausted.

....

Here. Have a Usagi and.. ..random Tokage.
Usagi some times plays the flute to himself when he's alone.. ...this charms the ever-loving fuck out of me.

I was looking at my "Art of Tales From Earthsea" book and I liked the way the concept sketches looked.

.....

Wow, that's really neat. I love the softness of the colors. It reminds me of the storybooks I used to have as a child.

Hmm I wonder if this is a newer Deviant who's just stumbled across this gallery?
I agree that art should be credited, but IMHO, C-Puff is one of the most stringent artists about crediting and promoting the original artist I've ever seen, here or elsewhere, and that's one of the reasons I enjoy her work so much, aside from the incredible attention to detail and mad art skillz.

That aside, Wow. This is so different from your usual style I wouldn't have guessed it was yours save for Usagi himself. I love the consistency in the way you draw your characters. You have a recognizable style. I like the muted watercolor background, it's quite a change, but it fits the mood of the piece and brings out the feeling of, for a moment anyway, contentment.

I hardly need to say it, I think you already know; well done.

Rejoicing in the day,

She's been here for a short while I gave her my opinion on the matter, and I stand by it.
But thank you very much for the complements I love Stan Sakai's work, I love his skill and talent sure, but I also love his heart, his love for his own work, his delicate handling of characters and situations and I love his openness to his fans and his patient, giving personality. I hope to one day meet him in person at a con to sign something for me so I can try and cohere a sentence into telling him so XD;; He's been very kind to me. Both through his art and in real life. All I ever do is try and pay homage to his work, never claim it as my own.
*stops gushing* but thank you very much for your support X'3

XD anyway, yes. I'm not sure how the inspiration for this came. Pretty much just "I want to draw Usagi! I want to draw him playing his flute! I want it to look like the watercolour concept pictures in this book! and I want a tokage." I really liked making this. I've been so tired lately it was wonderful to do something relaxing and not super-complicated, yet new and unfamiliar to experiment with and I'm proud of the result X3
With tiredness and stress, I needed a soothing image

Anyway thank you so very much. I'm really glad you like it! 8'D

Meh, opinions... you know what they're compared to, everyone has one and sometimes they smell.

Love it. Watercolors are too cool. My mom does watercolor, oddly enough, and I love her paintings though she never does anything quite as cool as Usagi.

Apparently it's not what I draw, it's the way I draw it she has a problem with. My personal style I mean *is saddened by this*

I love the look of watercolour but I've never tried using it before. I'm fond of gouache though

Pfffft.

Well then you can only take the opinion with a grain of salt. Not everyone will adore your work like some of us do. heh

Everyone has a personal style and I think being true to your own is important. If not, where is the originality?! It would be rather pointless, don't you think, to simply recreate what has already been done exactly- that's what we have scanners and printers for.

Fan art is a fun way to practice new skills and techniques. (at least it is for me)

What is a gouache? (my lack of art knowledge is showing, I know.) *blushes*

C-Puff In reply to Marysmuse [2010-01-10 01:50:36 +0000 UTC]

XD Gouache is a kind of paint, It's kinda like watercolour but much thicker, although if you thin it out with enough water it's pretty much the same thing. Even when it dries though it's still affected by water, so if you get the canvas wet you'll ruin the picture. I don't know much about the technicalities of the paint sadly XD;; just that I like it.

Hmm sounds just like acrylics to me. LOL

Thanks for the education... I do like learning about different materials. I'm afraid I no longer have the patience to experiment too extensively with them though. I'm concentrating on my technique. Ah well.

Nice. The Tokage and the way in which he holds the flute are particularly well done.

Not sure wth zodiac is going on about, considering I've seen Usagi wandering about playing the flute with a similar feeling to what you're portraying here. It's soft and contemplative, as if he were just taking a moment to himself to think things over or just relax.

Thank you very much~ I know nothing about the flute, so I'm glad to hear you like the way he's holding it XD;; *used reference for sure*

I gave her my opinion but I'm glad to know you "get it" at least XD
Usagi needs his quiet moments. We all do.
Anyway thank you once again~!

The concept is very well thought out. Yet, the image I am seeing of Usagi, somehow makes a less serious character, than how the comic portrays him. Not that your art is horrible or terrible, but if you study the images in Sakai's books, you'll see the more serious acts of Usagi's life. I'd to also add that when doing any sort of fan art, from a book or an existing story...It's important to credit the creator's work. Because if a copyrighted character is published...on a website or any where in the public, and the artist's name is not credited, you could be facing charges of copyright infringement-therefore paying a huge fine. If you don't like the way I'm addressing you, I'm sorry...but my feelings are allowed to be expressed...not by means to offend. But by means of an artistic viewpoint

C-Puff In reply to zodiac1 [2010-01-08 02:39:53 +0000 UTC]

I don't agree with you at all.
UY has hundreds upon hundreds of tiny, quiet moments in which nothing dramatic happens where the characters involved do nothing but enjoy life in its simplicity. There are stories where Usagi is spending a night in a well-meaning peasant's home and while he sits by the fire he allows the peasant's children to climb all over him, or when he met a flute playing monk in the forest and spent most of his time just sitting and talking with him about music, nature and life in general. There is a story which, the entire story takes place in one room where it is just him and his friend Sanshobo enjoying some tea together and talking.
It is because of these quiet moments that I love the series. It isn't explosive and "in-your-face" as most comics are.

To only focus on UY's violence, bloodshed and drama is to do the series an immense discredit. Usagi's stories are always balanced, so that when there IS drama and violence they're portrayed as the events they really are, an ugly disruption of life. Stan's restraint yet brutality of his violence rings as hard as it does because it is tempered with moments of calm serenity. And that's why it works.

As for Usagi being serious character all the time.. ..
..... well...

No. He's not XDD

Also, I don't really see the point of saying "UY (c) Stan Sakai" in every single picture I upload because I feel I talk enough about the original creator as it is. I talk about him in my journals, I discuss why I enjoy his work, I often mention things about his work in artists comments etc. So putting a notice in every single deviation seems redundant and unnecessary to me. I've NEVER claimed to be the owner of any pictures I've drawn of Usagi and his friends, I've never made a single cent from any of these pictures (which, incidentally, is the only way I would in fact be infringing on Copyright). I upload all my fanart to dA's "fanart" category, and I never have any of my fanart available to be bought as prints.
I make absolutely zero money out of my fanart. All I do is pay homage to the amazing work, talent and effort of who I believe to be a beautiful person.

I am a film-maker. I know about copyright. You don't need it to be explained to me.

(shrugs) Hmmmm...That's not what I am trying to say. I'm referring to your "design of Usagi" It's too Disney-felt. And if you feel I don't have a right to express my opinion without being one to use a harsh attitude...then fine. I understand and I will stick to my own ways; avoiding conflict in any manner.

Well I can't help that. It's how I draw. I don't try and emulate the style of the original artist because what does that prove? I could very easily draw the same way Stan Sakai does. It wouldn't be hard at all. But I'd rather be true to myself and draw what comes naturally.
Besides; Stan himself didn't seem to mind how I draw his characters very much.

XD I'm not a very big fan of the flute. It's hit and miss with me. More often than not I find it a little too twittery or high-pitched. However, there are a handful of songs where the flute is the dominant instrument that I honestly rhink I couldn't live without XD so there ya go. ...and most of them happen to be the Japanese flute 8DD

Anyway I'm very glad you like it X3

no luck though it was another sleepless night for me *sighs*

Wooden flutes tend to have a softer tone which makes them perfect for lullabies.

I think you're right. I was thinking about this on the bus today and I realised, all the songs with flutes in them that I like are wooden. It's the metallic flutes that I find a little bit overpowering
