Description A new test of Synfig Studio, this time trying out a trot animation with Octavia (my favorite non-Mane6 pony).

Didn't try anything fancy or special today (other than a Transform filter), I just tried to see if I could improve on the speed now that I knew how to work the program. [although I still ended up spending about as much time as Twilight, due to the usual fussing over details... Octavia IS my best pony, after all] :3

The eye blinking was previously a proof of concept, so this time around I omitted it since it's no longer necessary, and I wanted to save on file size and browser rendering speeds. ^^

I also planned to have her carry her cello/double bass strapped to her back, but left that out too since it's too early for a wacky test like that. XD

[besides, usually you roll those cases... I've seen one in real life and they are HUGE!]

Next up is Derpy (Flying test) and Violet (Passage test).

Hey Nice work using Synfig
I wonder if we'll ever get an Open Source MLP Fan-made Short Episode
...
That sounds long and complicated xD
How different is animating in Synfig as it is in Flash?

Howdy! Β ^^

Well I think we've had Blender-esque video shorts before, so I would imagine that counts. Β ^^

But given how ingrained Flash is to MLP:FiM, plus the "youthfulness" of the overall Brony culture, I doubt it. Β

I myself didn't really spend much time doing these, given Synfig was woefully incomplete at the time (or might still be, haven't checked), and hence nowhere near as intuitive as say an Inkscape or even a Blender. Β Well I haven't used Flash in over a decade, my own impression was that Synfig was easier to animate small segments, but the overall UI was too incomplete and Β unpolished to easily get together a full work. Β Again, it's probably improved a bit in two years, so if you want to try it, your mileage might vary. Β

I downloaded Synfig when I started wanting to do Flash animation, and found it rather messy and weird xD

And the only tutorials I could find had a guy with a voice that'll put you to sleep when driving on the highway, I couln'd bear it >.<

So I just went ahead and got Flash, some tutorials and haven't done anything about that ever since xD

But, yeah, it is pretty basic. I don't think it has the community diffusion other open source projects have like Blender or Inkscape

:/

oh lol, so it hasn't changed any in two years.Β  That's a little sad.Β  =v=

Perhaps if I required it for my art at the time, I might have tried to stick with the program and perhaps find some way to help out the project.Β  But neither Flash nor Synfig animation really appealed to me, and in fact I had a lot better draw improvising animation works in Ren'Py... www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSS7j1…

[setting aside the fact that Flash can be plenty expensive, and it doesn't run on most modern mobile platforms]Β

So thus ended that chapter... it's a shame about Synfig, but you can't win them all.Β  At least Blender is an infinitely-better-run open source project, and it shows in the strength of the community. ^^

It would be nice to have a pretty good alternative to all the main commercial applications found out there in the market
But I dare to say that most people who use Flash or do Flash animation, are not even aware of what Open Source means xD
Blender and Inkscape are the biggest examples of what the potential of the open source movement can do
Without mentioning all the Linux environment that exists too

Aww thanks. Originally she was like that because I wanted her to carry a cello case on her back, but eventually left it out. But I agree, she looks cuter this way anyway. ^^

I like here determined expression. For anyone who's read The Vinyl Scratch Tapes (and if you haven't, what are you waiting for?: [link] ), it's as if she's thinking, "I'm going to give that crazy DJ a piece of my mind!"

Thank you. ^^

Yes, the expression was accidental since she originally was supposed to have that giant cello on her back (so the expression was sort of like what you would do when carrying a big weight....). XD

But well, it all worked out in the end. ^^

I have to know how you did this amazing and smooth gif. It would be great use for me, I need to know how to animate a pony like you have. It is important for me!! Haven't found anything useful on YouTube. :/

C-quel In reply to j300mindstorm [2012-05-03 01:18:14 +0000 UTC]

Hey hey. ^^

Well it's kind of a shame that I don't do pony animations anymore (I'm a professional piΓ±ateer now). ^^

However, all of my animated GIFs have source files to download in their descriptions, so you can definitely dissect how I made the animations.

Download the Synfig animation suite...

[link]

...maybe go through some simple tutorials on usage, and then once you're comfortable using it go ahead and load up Octavia's source file. The program is still beta-quality, but once you get the hang of it it's actually better at raw animation than Flash (and it's free to boot).

I'm actually surprised you're amazed by Octavia, given she's the least smooth of my animated GIFs. ^^

Violet is by far the smoothest of the group: [link]

j300mindstorm In reply to C-quel [2012-05-03 15:37:20 +0000 UTC]

I'm amazed by all of them actually. just on my I-Device it comes out smoothly animated (computers usually show everything slower)

I like them all, could only comment on 1 of them or it'll just get annoying I bet. haha
ended up being this one.

C-quel In reply to j300mindstorm [2012-05-04 02:14:34 +0000 UTC]

haha, nah, I wouldn't find that annoying. But still, Octavia's happy now cause she feels extra special, so it's all good. ^^

It's a shame Synfig is only cross-platform with desktop OSes (Mac/Linux/Windows), and not iOS or Android, but maybe that won't be a problem for you. Anyway, enjoy your animation testing! ^.^

Yes, GIFs do play kindly with modern smartphones and smart devices, probably because they're trying to get this format to die already. But so glad you were able to see this in full. ^^

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... >>;

...

Well... you DO sound like a kitten, even though you look like a floating balloon squid, so I'll give you that. ^^b

Someone did explain to me before the whole GIF situation with iOS and Android... it definitely has to do with the fact that GIF is an archaic, non-free format that they don't want to have to deal with anymore. In other words, they'll never lift more than a finger's worth of effort to optimize their browsers for GIF support ever again. I guess it's the same approach they're doing with Flash and the whole "HTML5 is the future thing" -- not to say that's not a bad idea (cause it isn't, HTML5 rocks!), but it certainly doesn't seem to acknowledge the reality that... well...

GIFs are kinda/sorta everywhere.

Too bad MNGs and APNGs never caught on, they could have offered a good, fast, free and universally-available alternative to GIFs.... >>
