I've read about this plane. From what I understand, it was the only one that could take on the American Hellcat. I read one account about an ace who flew one of these and successfully engaged four or five Hellcats at once.

eh at the end of war ( when it was too late )  Japan at least noticed that Zero is not awesome plane, however even with better planes  - you cant do much if you have no good pilots. And good pilot is worth much more than even best plane .Japan lost a lot of pilots and new were trained fast .... they had no chances vs US pilots which were trained well.  Thomas Buchanan McGuire ( P 38 Ace ) died  fighting single obsolete Oscar - however pilot was experienced flying instructor... but it was rare example.

Yes, the Zero was pretty good early in the war when the Japanese had battle-hardened pilots and opponents who first underestimated them, but "pretty good" doesn't cut it against superior planes flown by good pilots. In a way, the Japanese Air Force had the same problems as the Luftwaffe. Even though they managed to build planes, those planes just big paperweights if there are no pilots to fly them or fuel.

well zero was good in 1941  but its has very bad sides even at the start of war ..it was fast and very maneuvering and even well armed .....but it was light airplane ...without really any armor and without "choke up fuel tanks" ( Im not sure i used good words )   ...so even few bullets could make him burn or destroyed. American planes were always very "strong" - even " old auntie" P-40 was able to fight against zero very well.

Indeed. The Zero and other Japanese fighters were very nimble and often had amazing range, but they couldn't withstand any battle damage. And I definitely agree with you about the P-40. The P-40 with guns blazing could plow right through them. And the P-38 Lightning was deadly against them, too. The P-38 couldn't do a turning fight with a Zero, but it much more heavily armed and could both climb and dive faster than the Zero. And I understand the Germans called the P-38 the "forked-tailed devil."

well P 38, or rest of modern planes ( p 47, corsair, mustang ) were kind of upper class for Zero ....He could fight them only if they agreed for such fight with max speed below 600 km/h in 1944 it was obsolete plane Well Luftwaffe was updating their planes much better ...me 109k4 was able to fly with speed 740 km/h, Fw 190D13-  730 km/h, i don;t even mention ME 262... when last Zero - a6m8 if i remember, was able to fly with 570 km/h.... In 1944 It was slow, paper plane with average weapon.

Yes, being so light was the Zero's problem. There wasn't really anything Japanese designers could do with it. Adding armor and heavier weapons would ruin its real assets... range and nimble agility...so there wasn't much they could do it improve it. And yes, the Germans were designing amazing craft toward the end of the war.
