Description Today was a difficult day... I received another disappointment, so I remembered of this old idea about Guinevere and spent my evening painting. My original idea was to do an oil painting of it (and that was back in June), but unfortunately now I don't have enough time for oils, so there you go with watercolours.

I didn't use to identify with Guinevere, but now I do, in a certain sense.

Watercolours on Cotman 300 gr. The original is on sale.

I like how although the sad the portrait is full of color. I always imagined the Arthurian leyends hippie (Most of all because the film Excalibur and all the folk grups like Pentangle and Fairport Convention). Now they have more mud and blood and tatoos in my mind, cause of "The winter King".

I adore Excalibur! I've seen that movie I don't know how many times... And yes, in the past (I mean, in films from the 50-70s) they used to represent Medieval legends more in shiny technicolor than they do now. Also in movies about Robin Hood, for example... now they'd cover everyone in dirt and sweat.

I'm a huge Arthurian nut! But I... do not like Guinevere as a character (to put it mildly). My dislike of her mostly stems from my loathing of Lancelot and the character derailment Gawain went through after Lancelot was introduced into the mythos. Gawain's been my favorite knight since childhood so... yeah.

But the colors in this are FABULOUS. And Guinivere's expression is so real and detailed. I see worry and apprehension and maybe even a little guilt on her face (perhaps over her affair with Lance?). Or maybe just pondering over political machinations. Or all of the above? It's such a great expression.

Thank you

Oh, but I totally understand about Guinevere. I didn't use to like her as well, mainly because I'm uneasy with infidelity issues and, moreover, I deeply like king Arthur, and would choose him 100 times over Lancelot.
The thing that made me identify both with Lancelot and Guinevere, for the first time in my life, were Heather Dale's songs. I don't know if you know her: she's a Canadian singer who wrote/sung a lot of songs about Arthuriana, including a couple written from Lancelot's point of view (For Guinevere, The Trial of Lancelot, May Queen) and a few from Guinevere's POV as well (Miles to Go) is the only that comes to my mind now). For the first time in her songs I felt the drama of Guinevere and Lancelot as two human beings who didn't want to hurt other people, but instead found themselves trapped among love and duty.

DIDN'T WANT TO HURT OTHER PEOPLE? Lancelot killed off all three of Gawain's sons while trying to escape when he was caught in the Queen's room - where he went despite having been warned by Gawain that Mordred and Agravain were lying in wait to catch him in flagrante. THEN he killed the unarmed Gaheris and Gareth when saving Guinevere from the stake, where she ended up because Lancelot wouldn't take Gawain's warning.

Lancelot? Rergh!

If it's true that he didn't want to hurt anyone, then his 'misadventures' prove that he was a blithering idiot running behind his male appendage.

[/Lancelot-hating Gawain fangirl rant]

I don't blame Gwen. I just think she could have chosen someone better than Lancelot .

I was talking of what they look like in Heather Dale's songs, not about other versions of the story. I'm not at all an arthurian expert and the versions I have personally read/watched are very limited. I do love Boorman's Excalibur and for example in that movie the only ones I support are Arthur, Merlin, and Morgana

I'll wait for your version of Lancelot for finally learning more about him!

I'm very sorry to hear that. Or, unless it's a mood that is beneficial to artistry I suppose there's a silver lining.

Drawing is really helpful in expressing the emotions you have bottled inside... So yes, in a certain sense not every blue mood is bad.
