Description Species: Raja clavata
Length: 22cm

Info: Easily one of my favourite curiosities and one of my favourite things from Iceland - especially since it was absolutely free of insects. Iceland seems to have one of the most annoying, strong and almost immortal kind of maggot. I've seen them more than my mother the past few days, which is funny since I am actually living at home whilst I have semester break. Anyway, the war seems to go well for my side and I hope to succeed soon. The sea wolf skull sadly didn't "make" it. Maybe I can safe the jaws - it depends on how fast the maggots INSIDE the bone die. I tried it with different methods by now and now I am using patience. Anyway, this ray tail was a surprise. I saw one in an awesome private collection we visited in Iceland (I will upload photos soon!) the first time and since I have a soft spot for fish I added it on my wishlist. A few days later Christina pulled a dried ray out of nowhere on a beach we were strolling around on. It was raining a bit but I squealed out of joy (which I rarely do!) and took the tail. After what I experienced the last days I am more than suprised that it was not eaten by maggots. But well, I certainly won't complain! For now it is dry and safe but I was thinking about putting it for storage in alcohol and treat it like a wet specimen. Unfortunately it can't be touched then, which would be a pity. Who doesn't want to rip off their skin whilst touching a dried fish tail?! Damn that thing really is thorny.

I was pretty happy to find it.

There was the maggot problem at the wolf eel and sadly I was not able to freeze it.

Tie a piece of invisible fish line around the tail, secure it to the lid of the wet specimen jar and then when you open it.... Tadaaa it is pulled out and you easily can rip your skin off again!

What a great idea!

(Seriously... I often thought about rehydrating it or putting it into alcohol - just in case)
