For the Beacon volumes, it was pretty, fluffy, tasty cake. Uncle Qrow tried to warn Ruby; the cake was a lie... And now she knows just what she signed up for handling; criminals, savages, Grimm in escalating numbers and/or strength, a hidden game of power played for keeps...and possibly the return of friends thought honorably dead. Β
This picture would still make one dreadful yet awesome cliffhanger image. All we need is Ruby's anguished scream of denial, and fade to credits...Β

If I had more time, and if this were more popular, I could do a twenty page horror comic. Just on stuff I couldn't think of how to do in a single image. I had this idea that, since Penny controlled her swords with her Semblance, the Geist wouldn't be able to. So we have Penny walking around with the swords dragging by their strings behind her, making this scraping noise wherever they went.
The other ideas were... darker.Β

This is true. Realizing that no one in a story has been issued plot armor for the big finish has been a painful pleasure for me as an anime fan of long standing. Goes all the way back to Robotech, it does... I still have to pay the face to RT for schooling a new generation of anime and semi-anime fans on what it really means to love a series that pulls no punches, but makes you love it anyway. Β (Even anime itself has gotten soft in the past decade; thanks to Monty for making Japan itself remember the gory glory days of the medium.)

Actually I am currently anticipating Ruby & Jaune nearly getting eaten along with Uncle Qrow by an uber-Grimm...and then getting rescued from it by Raven. Who will then capture everyone and make us all anxious until Qrow gets revived and tells Raven to stop being a drama queen and be nice to Summer Rose's kid...and tell the bandit girls to give Jaune back. (There goes Jaune, undercutting the mood again!

That would be awesome, Raven saving the day. Ruby is technically family. I'm still hoping she's how the team gets back together. Otherwise we'll have another volume of the four girls hunting each other down.

For a certainity Volume 5 will begin the reunion process. Weiss is heading south, Yang will be heading east to find Raven & Ruby, and Ruby will be most of the way to Haven (maybe). Blake may be the one not going anywhere for the finale...Β

I'm guessing one of two things will happen. Both rely on Beacon Tower coming back online at the end of this volume.
Either communications come online in time to see Haven on fire, and presumably Ren and Nora will be on-screen and everyone will rush to go save their friends. Quick, easy excuse to bring the team together.
Or everyone but Ruby already has a reason to head back to Vale and Beacon, Blake and Weiss to rejoin their friends, Yang's already there, so the communication comes online long enough for Glynda to send for help, saying essentially that Salem has doubled her efforts (like she said she would), and Raven sends Ruby and Jaune to fight and die in that war while Ren and Nora kick off the Mistral storyline.
I don't see this volume not ending on a cliffhanger, though. RT loves cliffhangers.Β

Weiss: Well, I'm running away from home to find my team and go after the people who spoiled the tournament and ruined Beacon. And who also made Atlas look foolish in the bargain. Naturally Father doesn't want me to do that, so all the usual exit points are being watched.
Flint: And you thought some lowly folks like us can help you skip town and make a run for Vale? (grins) Well, you thought right! It will be a real pleasure to help you, Miss Schnee!!Β
Weiss: Just "Weiss" thank you, I am through with being a Schnee for a while.
Neon: How long is that?
Weiss: Until my father and brother understand what's really going on!
Flint: So, probably never then?
Wiess: (looks away) Probably, yes...Β

Jaune: Geez, what a lousy day. First Β we ran ourselves ragged in some grimm-infested ruin getting herbs for Ruby's Uncle Jerk. Then we nearly got eaten by a scary Grimm, and Ruby drained all her Aura with the killing blow and knocked herself out. THEN we got captured by bandits whose chief is Ruby's aunt. But who cares about that, the bandits took all my stuff and made me fetch firewood. I wonder what else could go wrong? (turns around) Oh!!
(Jaune POV of three bandit girls, who roughly look as if Emerald, Nora, and Pyrrha had grown up with Raven as a role model.)Β
Girl #1: See girls? I told you he would look good once he got out of that armor and hoodie & into a kilt!
(He does look good in his t-shirt & kilt, which is more utilikilt and less Highlander. The girls snicker and make appreciative sounds.)
Girl #2: Hey yellow boy, wanna play a game?
Jaune: What sort of game?
Girl #1: It's a really fun game called "bronco busting". (licks lips) You'll like it...

Blake: Great, just great, the White Fang is stronger than ever and doubling down on stupid. When will I learn to run from problems in the right direction? *sighs* Maybe it's time to find Ruby and Yang again. Dad was right, I should have stayed with them. (enters home) At least I have the medicine for Sun. Maybe he'll be quiet now...

Adam: (offscreen) They are indisposed right now! But I'm here to welcome you!
