It's canon, though there's a couple continuity errors. I haven't read the second one yet, it came out today and my app is being weird, but it takes place between vol 3 and 4 and seems to have a lot of flashbacks.Β

Yeah, but the only RWBY mermaids I could find look like your classic Disney princesses.
I want them to look like they mean business.

I am of the theory that Penny's Aura came from someone, as a test of the aura transfer machine, so she is gone. otherwise why not make more and why make her look human?

I have two points to that. The first is that she's not organic, so she has no organs to decay or anything. Put her back together and turn her back on. The second is that either she's an early product that they were testing and they're going to mass produce more (I assume we'll see them in Atlas), or they have made more and they're just as human-like as her so we haven't noticed. And the point of the appearance is so they can function where the other Atlas weapons can't, unnoticed and unassuming.Β
Though I do think Penny was based off an existing soul. I just think Penny's stories weren't wrapped up as neatly as Pyrrha's, and being a robot makes it easier to put her back together.Β
