Description This is my first completed large stained glass panel. It measures 17 1/2 x 16. The glass chosen for the turtle and background were scraps from other projects. The border is made of a dark brown smooth finish glass with hammered glass accents. The metal solder is a lead mix, finished with a copper oxidation. It's around 8 pieces. I can only estimate how many hours it took because I didn't work on it continuously. I'm going to ballpark it at 20 hours.

I'm pretty happy with how it came out. It gave me good experience on working on larger pieces.

Thank you! There needs to be more traditional stained glass on DA, people don't even recognize the real stuff as opposed to that colored plastic junk.

Constructed several years before, so no reference to Tank. However, I do like turtles (obvious from this piece) and when RD got Tank as a pet I finally surrendered and admitted she was my #1 pony. The similarities had become just too overwhelming.

I would like to try stained glass, too. Could you what website/book to read if there is any??

Thank you!

I learned from my friend how to do everything. I have googled images for inspiration, but no books. Your best bet is to start out with some small (5 piece) suncatchers so you get the hang of the process and the design challenges it presents. Then gradually move onto larger, more complicated pieces.

There is a glass shop near where I live, and I think the owner makes and sells stained glass.
Maybe I should ask him if he can teach me. I was always thinking to ask but I am a complete stranger to him. :C

Stained glass is a super expensive hobby to have in your own home (I should know, and someone gave me their old glass grinder, which saved me an easy $100). If he can teach you and let you practice on his equipment and use some of the scrap glass from his studio, you should be able to get the hang of it. Glass people are usually super excited that someone wants to learn their craft, so don't be afraid to ask!

This I really like - unusual subject, simple pieces and a smoothness of design that combine gorgeously into an in-depth picture - just what stained glass should be!

Thank you so much! I love working with stained glass because of all the different textures that can be combined into relatively simple compositions.

Very nice colors, and the ripple glass is a nice touch in the border.

Thanks! The border was a last minute addition when I thought the panel looked a little small.

Thanks! That's the variety you get when you (carefully) pick through the scrap glass.
