Description
Alright so back in 2017 I had an Inktober prompt of "succulent" and I drew that first Bulbasaur as a variation for the regular bulb, with a toad base for an added touch of realism. Soon after I did Charmander and Squrtle as well, based on newts and tortoises. I found trying to find the balance between real animal and pokemon features a nice challenge so I wanted to more. Little did I think how challenging some of the newer designs would be xD (looking at you, Chikorita and Chespin)
The further this went on the more I tried to stick to realism so mammals do not have bright blues or greens... nor is there just lit fire (though luckily newest gens do not have open fire anyways)

In case you're interested, below is the list of animals I used as the base for the starters, some are pretty vague while others are super specific

Gen 1: toad + aloe vera *** (smooth) newts *** generic tortoise

Gen 2: pygmy hippo + monstera *** Lowland streaked tenrec (Hemicentetes semispinosus) *** juvenile crockodile

Gen 3: Uroplatus phantasticus satanic leaf-tail gecko *** generic baby chicken *** axolotl

Gen 4: alligatr snapping turtle * baby chimp *** juvenile emperor penguin

Gen 5 : skinks (as snivy line loses legs and skinks have legless lizard speciess as well) * boar piglett * sea otter

Gen 6: pangolin * fennec fox * leaf frogs

Gen 7: owlett * domestic cat * sea lions (in banana pose because apparently seals are like that when they're happy)

Gen 8: marmosets * just .. rabbits * generic chameleon
