I've not seen one with white on its head like that before....are they all meant to have white stripes on their head?

He is beautiful, though

Yes, they do have the white stripe, although its width and shade can vary from snake to snake. Thanks!

why are they called milk snakes? i had a dream about one a couple of days ago - i was pulling these particular snakes out of my bed because it was infested with them! i hate to think they were after me since i had no milk with me in bed

Apparently it used to be believed that they liked milk and some people even believed they would drink it straight from the cow. They don't, of course, bu the name has persisted.

Trust me on this. They do drink water though. They suck it up like a horse.

Wow, nice shot of your unusual pet. The details of the scales are outstanding, and the colors make this snake very alluring.
Great composition and lighting!

Thanks! They are one colorful species, part of the reason I have one of these.

Such a cute snake! And a lovely picture too, especially the way the red contrasts with the green background (and then the head blends with the brown; that's either phenomenal luck or incredible skill on your part).

Thanks! I think it was a bit of luck, and I hope, some skill. I took about 20 shots and kept my eye on the background to get the best color complement I could. He also wouldn't hold still.

Yah, live animals will do that

I always wanted a snake, but my parents won't let me get one... so the closest I can come is taking care of the snakes in the local nature center. They're nice snakes, though.

Well, at least you don't have to buy the food for them. My Burmese python (of which I will post pics of sometime) eats two XXL rats per week and she still seems hungry after that. Will be moving her to rabbits soo. Fortunately they are frozen.

Awesome! We (my fiance and I) have a red tailed boa. He's pretty awesome, but I think milk snakes are so pretty!

Thanks!! I used to have a red-tailed boa too. Maybe again sometime, but for now I have enough snakes to keep me busy.

I also have a milk snake, but mine is black and he is only 6 years old. I had taken a picture of him similar to this one, but didn't upload it yet. And very nice picture by the way.

Caloxort In reply to AllyCat1994 [2011-06-29 03:34:41 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Not sure how long, but most snakes make it at least to 15-20 years.

Is he a good pet?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Caloxort In reply to Punda315 [2011-06-29 03:34:02 +0000 UTC]

Indeed he is. Never once tried to bite and generally doesn't flail about too much either. I have a few snakes that go crazy trying to get away almost as soon as I pick them up, but MacGyver is relatively calm.

Those R the ones. And usally stupid people get them and abuse them

Caloxort In reply to Punda315 [2011-06-29 23:38:51 +0000 UTC]

Indeed. Patience always works for me. You never hold a snake, you let it hold you, and if you are patient even the wiggly ones eventually slow down.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Caloxort In reply to Fietolini [2011-06-28 17:47:10 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! And yes, he is resourceful, although thankfully a little short of his namesake. Milk snakes and king snakes both have a reputation for being escape artists, and he has escaped a few times. Fortunately I have his cage in a display case, so he can't get completely away.
