Description And now for something completely different... Their common name is the "Smooth Lepiota", how boring. This deviation brought to you by my front yard.

Ok, didn't really know where to put this. Technically I suppose it's a photomanipulation, since it's shots of the same 2 shrooms composited together and additional elements from photoshop, but it's meant to read as a single shot and none of the subsequent digital art categories fit. Also it's not really 'art photography' in that it's primary purpose is not aesthetic nor exclusively visual (ie. the text). Also it's not a plant, phylogenetically, fungi are actually closer to animals, but I'd be receiving a lot of 'Huh?' reactions if I put this in one of the animal categories. And I didn't want to dump this in the melting pot of 'Misc'. So 'Flowers and Plants' it is, only because there are no categories for whole other KINGDOMS of organisms while animals have THREE. (Don't mind me.... biologist ranting, perhaps I'll suggest something.)

01.12.05 I did suggest something, and look, something might have changed: [link]

That looks great! Informative AND artistic! And yeah, it's disappointing there's no category for fungi - there are SO many interesting images of mushrooms and lichen and the like!

Thanks! And yes, we should keep petitioning for a fungi category. If enough people submit fungi images, we'll create the need for it. Power to the mycelium!

Beautifully done! I never pick lepiotas because I'm too lazy to do spore prints and there are so many evil white mushrooms. I stick with the easy ones like shaggy manes and chanterelles.

Hey, thanks. These ones sprung up in my front lawn, or I would have gone for something more distinctive as well. Thanks for the other favs too. Take care.

Yes, i noitced few years back , me and a buddy sent a letter, there is definetly no mushroom photography section to choose from yet so many in the mycology area putting up photos.

Great stuff BTW.

Sweet! I love how this looks like something you'd see in the biology lab. Very nicely done!

I'm a little inspired to read up on mushrooms, now.

Three and a half cheers for biology!

Very cool. It has a sort of Romantic, pressed flower, natural philosopher feel to it. Perfect for your digital cabinet of curiosities.

Haha, that was a long line of thought; figuring out the category.

Anyway, what caught my attention was ... fungi are closer to animals? But I thought -- they're like in the category of flower-less plants, together with algae, moss and ... erm, I dunno the English word. Fern?

Oh, yeah, nice picture (and font! ) too, is the background brown paper? It looks pretty.

Nope! Algae is in a different group, ferns and moss are both in the Bryophytes section, and fungi are in the Fungi category. Wow, that's like, as detailed as I remember from AP Biology last year. That's sad. I should know the names of the groups besides just "bryophytes".

Aneesah, I think you mean non-vascular plants (those lacking specialized tissues for the transport of water and nutrients). This group, the Bryophytes, as mentioned by shattered-black-rose, includes mosses, liverworts, and hornworts. Algae are indeed a separate lineage and ferns (the Pterophytes) are also separate as they have vascular tissue, although they are similar to bryophytes in that they reproduce by spores and have free-living gametophyte stages. Fungi, however, represent another kingdom of organisms. Plants are a kingdom, so are animals, so are bacteria, among others, though systems of classification are still in flux.
Fungi differ significantly from plants in that most fungi are saprophytic (obtain nutrients from dead organic matter), though some are parasitic (live off of and cause harm to other living things), while most plants are photosynthetic (make their own simple sugars from light energy). Additionally, the main structural component of fungal cell walls is chitin, whereas it is cellulose in plants.

Yay, scientific discussion! That's the ultimate goal of my professional work. Thank you both for participating, too many people are content to never wonder about the world around them and to never ask. Yes, the background is a scrap of brown paper salvaged off some package, it also enables the white spores to be seen. Technically spore prints work best on half black / half white (vs. the brown/white here). White to gauge the true colour of the spores, and black so they show up if they're light. Big thank you aneesah for the comment on the font, it's actually my calligraphy using a tablet. My normal handwriting is tiny and illegible, so it's quite nice to have someone compliment any of my lettering. Hmm, perhaps my username makes more sense now...
