Description Full view pls
Mardin is a city in southeastern Turkey. It is known for the Artuqid Turks (Artıklı or Artuklu in Turkish) architecture of its old city, and for its strategic location on a rocky hill near the Tigris River that rises steeply over the flat plains.

Mardin has often been considered an open air museum due to its historical architecture. Most buildings use the beige colored limestone rock which has been mined for centuries in quarries around the area.

Mardin is one of the oldest settled areas in upper Mesopotamia. Excavations done in the 1920s discovered remains in the area that dated to 4000 BCE. The first known civilization were the Subarians who were then succeeded in 3000BCE by the Hurrians. The Elamites gained control around 2230 BCE and were followed by the Babylonians, Hittites, Assyrians, Romans, and Byzantines.

In 692, the Muslim Ummayads, arrived and introduced Islam. The Abbasid Caliphate based in Baghdad replaced them in 750. Factions of the Seljuk Turks fought each other over Mardin as it changed hands many times before it was finally taken by Nahm ad-din Ilghazi, the bey of the Artukids, a Turkish dynasty founded by the Seljuk Emir Artuk. During the Artukid period, many of Mardin's historic buildings were constructed, including several Mosques, Palaces, Madrassas and Hans.

In 1517, Mardin was annexed by the Ottomans under Selim I. During this time, Mardin was administered by a governor directly appointed under the Ottoman Sultan's authority. In 1923, with the founding of the Republic of Turkey, Mardin was made the administrative capital of a province named after it.

Thank you for this photo and for the info as well!

I love cities with history and also.. I love the co-existence of old and new. For example, I remember a movie where they show a place in the ancient European city: the houses are ages old and well-kept, the roadway paving is old and very clean, everything is old and you may think it happens in ancient times. But then, a car arrives, it stops and a man is going out from it and walks to the gate of the house. And it's a posh contemporary Jaguar, and the guy is in the chic mod suit. And suddenly you see that it happens nowadays and it a fantastic feeling Some people say that it's bad to combine old and new, but I don't agree: it's life, we have to respect traditions, take care of the heritage but it does not mean we have not to be contemporary, not to discover newness. And contrast things go very well together, don't they?

Well, I have to admit that I've never thought like you. I also love the heritage and grumble for the new things mostly. It is surprising for me but suddenly you changed my mind. You are right! It seems so enjoying and exciting to me now. Sure, except the modern buildings next to the old one.
This view made most of us crazy, with a great protest they had to stop building it ---> media.dunyabizim.com/news/2850…

You gave a new perspective, I am trully grateful

I feel honored by your kind words

...but I have to admit that I don't agree about architecture.. Yes, I agree that there are horrible examples of contemporary, new buildings built next to the old ones. It's a fault of the architect who doesn't respect the heritage or can't work with the context. I want to say, the look of the new and old together depends on the way it's realized.

For example:

Well, it's just my opinion and I respect the opinions which are different from mine

Oh, yes! I watched a documentary about combination of contemporary and the old buildings. They are amazing like art works but the sample that I sent you is like making a skyscraper behind the Pyramids. I am against ruining the beauty for commercial concern.
Well, you gave me inspiration and a new perspective, it is pericous for me.

It is one of the oldest cities of the world. As you know Mesopotamia is the begining of Western and Middle East culture. It was great to see such a place.
Thank you very much Dmitry
