My body is young, but my mind is very old.I cleaned up (sort of) a few doodles I posted on twitter of Samos making not-happy-faces. I'm not the kind of OC maker who enjoys making her characters go through a bad time just for the sake of making her OCs go through a bad time, but I really like seeing these kinds of expressions on Samos. On most characters actually, not even necessarily my own *nudges copy of kingdom hearts under rug* I don't know, I just like drawing pained and sad expressions the most, especially when there's hope for redemption/recovery afterwards. *nudges riku under the rug* ALSO! Samos's internal struggles are something I really connect to, and, as her creator, it's something I enjoy expressing through her. Don't get me wrong, though; she's my favorite when she's her usual happy and curious self. I just like taking advantage of the fact that she can be incredibly visual about her emotions, which leads to a lot of fun expressions to draw.
This is also where I get my current icon from!

I absolutely love the expressions you give your characters and the way you draw their features. If you don't mind me asking, do you have any advice for how to work on expression and facial features?Β

I definitely like having a good knowledge on facial muscles, so I can know how the face works, before I bend the rules to fit my style. Knowing how and where the face stretches and squishes can make for some really expressive expressions! I still have a lot to learn, myself, haha! I suggest keeping a mirror by you and practice making faces to help you see where creases and dimples come in.
I also like to study from the masters of animation, and I'll sometimes watch inspiring animated movies where I'll pause every so often to study a sequence of expressions on screen.Β
I'll also listen to emotional music OSTs and other instrumentals to set the mood for when I draw. Having some fitting music to draw to can really help bring emotion out!

These really are great expressions! And I definitely get that, expressions like these are nice to draw even though it is painful. IΒ like to draw fanart of characters being sad as well but it also makes me feel kinda bad : ((( With your own character it must suck so much more (but it looks so goood!).
