Description Winchester, Hampshire, England, United Kingdom, Winchester Castle - erected in the first half of XIII c. by Henry III the great hall was a part of the royal castle constructed in the second half of the XI c. on the site of old Roman fort, that once protected the city of Venta Belgarum. Destroyed by fire in 1302 castle was extended by Edward II. In 1558 castle ceased to be royal residence and was handed over to Winchester's city authorities. During the English Civil War (1642-1651) entire caste, but the great hall, was demolished.
