Description One more non-smut

I've been doing this in my 10 minute study breaks for oooh - quite a while now!

It's supposed to be Narcissa at 11 (I'm getting a feel for the character Crocky! ) but her eyes are a bit too nice for the way I imagined her. Still, 11 doesn't necessarily reflect what you'll be when you're older - and I've never really see her as the embodiment of all that's evil, just someone who's easily influenced by people with more power.

This one's actually 90% photoshop from an initial scanned pencil sketch - I'm practicing my colour

(full view is better)

Who would have thought Narcissa looked so angelic at 11?
really ice job with colors - I didn't know you could produce so nice (and realistic!!!)artwork from a pencil sketch.

Oooh - excellent *grins evilly*!!!

Ok - here's the first one ....colour pallettes for skin tones - do you grab colours from photos? paintings? other digital art? or do you just kind of know which ones to use? Mine seem to end up really dark/odd looking - just not quite the right colour....in fact, *any* colour tips would be lovely

honestly, i have about a zillion skin color palattes...none of which i EVER use. i really just chose my colors on a drawing-by-drawing basis. the thing you have to remember is that each character has theiir own palatte, like some are more pink as opposed to yellow...and all their colors will coordinate wiith that. another good tip is for highlighting a certain area (not ncecessarily on a portrait, this works for bg too) choose a really contrasting color, like the jade green and purple i used in "stranger in paradise" it really makes anything pop.
ummm i dunno how else to answer. more questions more questions!!! har har har now you've got me going!

OK - so maybe start with one base colour and work out the others for a painting from there? I'd never have thought of using the contrasting colours either - I just don't see that sort of thing when I look at art - though I'll be looking now...THANK YOU !!! You're such a lovely person to help me!! Drawing I'm fine with, but colour theory, or anything to do with colour really - not so good!!

OK I will *definitely* have more questions as I go....although I may not get huge amounts done over the next few weeks *sigh* I have major exams coming up But I'll be back!! (Mwahahahaha!!)

oh any questions are welcome. hmmm as far as starting with a base color, that works but i feel that sometimes with that method your colors can get kind of predictable and ho hum. a good way to start is with the extremes of hinted colors (like the greys and greens in skin) for instance look at the first few steps of my self portrait progress shots in scraps, that should illustrate what i mean. that way, even if your finished colors end up much closer to the "base" skin tone, it's much easier to get realistic-and interresting!-colors. and that applies for everything, not just skin. or "base" colors in ANY pictures, not just portraits, try finding the odd shadow color and build up what you would think of, like a red background for rocks and put the grey on top, you know?
just a thought.
and good luck with your exams!!!!

Heh - a lot of people have said she looks like Alice! It must be the colour YAAAY - I'm glad you like the brushwork though - I've been practicing in photoshop (secretly) for quite a while and this is the first one that doesn't look like it has the pox or something!!

The eyes are very cool! She almost looks like a mix of Narcissa and Alice in Wonderland. (the colours, I think!)

Nice colour job. I suck at skin tones, they always look like they are wearing pancake makeup!

Thanks Tripp! A lot of people have said she looks like Alice - it must be the colours! I'm glad I didn't give her a blue alice-band though

Heh - skin tones are so bloody hard - the last one I tried looked like it had some horrific skin disease - pancake make-up would have been a major improvement!! Toerning has some great tutorials linked from somewhere on her pages (can't remember where) - they helped I have to say!

Mmm - I tend to think of her as quite fragile and a bit young for her age.
