Description WhooHoo, I ended up doing Ho-oh after all!

Also, I'm still learning how to draw wings so bear with me!
And for once the scanner didn't chew it up so badly. I personally think there's not enough contrast overall but I'm too lazy to do anything about it.

I've always liked Ho-oh more than Lugia. Something about it's continuity between the first episode and across the entire series makes it feel very ingrained in everything that is Pokemon. I feel like the way it is referenced makes it a more 'justified' legendary than the others that only get mentioned once then tossed aside. I was pretty annoyed when all the other new legendaries happened and suddenly Arceus was almighty god of all pokemon or whatever.
Aaaaand, when I used to follow the series, (correct me if I'm wrong) Ho-oh was always the sign for Ash to continue his journey and keep on following his dreams and all that jazz, yeah? Well call me a cheeseball, but I like that meaning behind it too : )

Ho-Oh's my favorite legendary. I like the realistic approach, and, oh, I so desire to see its warm colors in this drawing. Perhaps the primary feathers are a tad short, but, I'm no biologist, though I think the overall anatomy is otherwise accurate (as far as a real Ho-Oh might go). The shading of those clouds looks like it took some time.

Ho-oh is my favorite as well ^^ this is beautifully done! with the wings don't be afraid to make some of the feathers out of place, birds don't always have perfect wings [has a ton of birds at home] that would help make it more natural looking ^^

Thanks! They're so quick on the wing that it's hard to notice the exact details in feathers, so sometimes I have to rely on google images, museum displays or diagrams, but I'll definitely keep your advice in mind : )

I love this picture so much! Amazing detail and all around great job! And I totally agree with your statement about how Ho-Oh feels more like a legend then the others. Ever since I watched the first episode years and years back, I was always entranced by the mysterious golden bird flying over the rainbow and now it is my favorite pokemon. Sniff...memories.

I can totally relate to that feeling after watching the first episode : )

I like that it's based on an actual legend. Though it's origin is obscure (something like Malaysian or Burmese, I think) I do recall that it was a very important figure in the culture it comes from.

It's possible the other legendaries are also obscure myths, but I've yet to see evidence of that, and they do seem like they were just randomly made-up to look cool.

I didn't know Ho-oh was based off anything more than just a phoenix! If you ever come across that legend let me know : )

That's the redirect from 'Houou', which is the Chinese word for phoenix, I believe. (Note: The eastern phoenix, western phoenix and Egyptian phoenix are all different legends.)

It doesn't mention it being of any particular cultural significance though. I'm sure I remember it was mentioned to be the symbol of a region or country or something like that...

I love the fact that you cross hatched some of the feathers. Im pretty sure that the clouds are a wash? :'D you did a great job on this. I also noticed that you made it seem like rays of light were coming off of the wings. I have just started shading in black and white, but you have done a great job of balancing the lights and darks. ((oh my gosh i sound like my art teacher xD)))

Thanks a bunch! You clearly have an eye for detail.
Not sure what a wash is outside of watercolors, but I just smudged a lot of charcoal : )

Love the new pictures. Really trying out different styles and medium? I'm glad Being able to work with an assortment of different mediums really brings value to an artist, in my opinion.

So far looking great! I would just pass down this little tid-bit of knowledge a great art teacher once told me, "Every great charcoal piece should have an absolute white, and absolute black. It makes everything else 'pop!'"
Even with ink, paint, or pencil; I took her words to heart; and it really does help too! Keep up the great work. I can't wait to see more.

Thanks for this comment Echaltraw!
I completely agree with you... It's always fun to see artists specialize in something and perfect it, but I have a rare kind of respect for people who can master many different mediums. That said, I'm the type of person to flip-flop between different things and never focus enough to get really good at it!
I also really appreciate the advice. You're right, the contrast is what makes charcoal such a bold medium. I would love to have worked with larger paper and with an actual charcoal stick, but unfortunately I was only equipped with on of those 'charcoal pencils' and very little patience. I will definitely remember those words as well when I pick it up again though!
Great hearing from you : )
