It's almost hard to believe this is a drawing. The detail is simply exquisite

( too for the Miskatonic books )

I never really thought about it with this series. But you're right. Gorey has always been a favorite artist of mine, and a big influence.

This one is amazing! I love the atmosphere, the detail, the lighting... It just sets such an amazing mood.Β  The perspective of those two last upper shelves is a bit forced, but otherwise this is perfect!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CapnDeek373 In reply to BitterBlinker [2018-04-07 22:20:40 +0000 UTC]

I purposely play with the perspectives in these. This particular one actually uses two different horizon lines.
The ceiling is done in true perspective, going to a vanishing point on a horizon line that's lower than
a second horizon line that the desk perspective goes back to.
The bookshelf itself is done isometrically with no perspective at all.
I love the mixing of pre-planned true perspective with alternate perspectives in the same piece, and even completely flat things with no perspective at all.

I know literally nothing about digital drawing/painting, so feel free to explain like I'm 5. HOW do you do that kind of shading, like all the tiny dots in different densities to create depth? It looks so tangible. When I opened the page, my fingers started doing that twitchy thing that happens when I was to know what something feels like to touch.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CapnDeek373 In reply to EveryNextDream [2017-12-30 14:51:31 +0000 UTC]

I start these out as a simple pencil sketch. I take a photo of the sketch (since I don't have a scanner.)
Then I basically "ink" it using Photoshop. I have a Wacom tablet, so I can use an actual "pen" to draw with.
I use the "Dissolve" setting on the pen tool in Photoshop.
That tool draws with solid black pixels as a opposed to usingΒ the "normal" setting which looks like regular pencil or paint-like brush lines.
There's also a setting for Dissolve that acts like a spray, still using that same brush. I use that for shading.
Sometimes I use varying degrees of a blur tool on those shaded areas to get a more normal shading effect.
I also use various photos for some textures in them... wood grain, dirt, peeling paint, things like that.
I work in different layers in Photoshop. One layer is the background (which I don't play with until things are done),
another is the original sketch. Over those I have a layer for just shading and another for the line work.
When everything is done, I use the Line and Shading layers to adjust light and dark on the paint layer.
The paint layer I use is a photo I took of this painting -Β the watch cat Β -Β with just the colored background before I painted the black.
Now that you've brought this up, I think I'll do a close upΒ that will show things exactly as they appear on my screen as I'm working on them.
