Description
The next morning, Kovu woke up with determination to approach the topic of the Pridelands future king. He looked around the cave for his son, but Chaka wasn’t around. Regardless, he called for Vitani to bring Nuka forward so he could speak to him regarding the previous night’s unfortunate event. Kuli followed.

“What were you two thinking?” The king asked. Nuka looked ashamed once again. Kuli didn’t say anything this time, except to say she was sorry. “Because you’re not from here and aren’t aware of our laws, consider this a warning.” Kovu said to Kuli. She nodded once. “As for you, Nuka, because of your recklessness and failure to obey my laws about hunting for fun, I must take away your entitlement to the throne as Future King of the Pridelands.” Kovu said.

“I am sorry for last night.” Nuka said, bowing his head in respect.

“The real reason is because Chaka’s home.” Vitani said, under her breath, but loud enough so Kovu could hear.

“The Future King must obey the laws and provide a good example for everyone.” Kiara said, as she approached the four Pride members. Vitani scowled. Nuka frowned at her.

“Mother, why can’t you just accept Chaka as the future king? He’s supposed to be anyway.” He asked her.

“Because my son, you would make a better king, unafraid of your own shadow.” Vitani growled, mockingly.

Kovu growled back. “Chaka has shown he is a grown lion now, not a cub.”

“Has he?” She asked. “Look, I love my nephew and all, but our mother worked hard to try to get these lands, and now that you have the privilege of ruling them, you’re going to risk it all to your son that could be beaten by his own sister. He couldn’t fight off any threat the Pridelands came across, and you know it!”

Kovu snarled at his sister. “Mother has nothing to do with this.”

“She would have chosen my Nuka to be the Future King, just like Scar chose you over our older brother!”

“Enough!” Kovu roared.

Kiara stepped between the two, before a fight broke out. She gave Vitani a stern look. “It is my sons birth-right to be King of the Pridelands, as it was mine to be queen. I was a terrible huntress, and was always getting myself into trouble. But with Kovu’s help, I feel we run these lands just fine.” She said.

Vitani snorted. “Sure, except Nuka has his lioness. What kind of a king doesn’t even have a queen?”

Kiara smiled. “Oh, I don’t think Chaka will have that problem much longer.” She said, winking at Kovu. Kovu had had enough of the discussion. He raised his head higher to make his final announcement.

“Chaka will be presented once again to the Pridelands this afternoon as the Future King. Nuka, I commend you for stepping down from the throne with dignity. You have our blessing, and may take which ever lionesses you wish to help start your own Pride again.”

“Thank you uncle, but the only lioness I wish to come with me is Kuli.” Nuka replied, smiling down at Kuli. She nuzzled his mane and smiled. “Where ever Nuka goes, I will follow.” She said.

Kovu turned to his sister once more. “Maybe you should go with them, Vitani.” He suggested. Vitani looked a little surprised. “Nuka will be the leader of his own Pride. I’m sure he will make you very proud, and you wouldn’t want to miss it.” He said, smiling. Vitani walked over a little embarrassed and butted her bother’s head. “I apologize.” She said, pausing. “Chaka will be... a fine king.”

“Speaking of Chaka, where is he?” Shani said, as she sleepily walked towards the group. “What was all the shouting? What’d I miss?”

Kiara chuckled at her daughter. “Chaka will be king, and you will help him rule the Pridelands.” She said. Shani smiled. “Well, duh. I already knew that.” She laughed. Kovu looked towards the mouth of Pride Rock, and couldn’t see his son anywhere. “Has anyone seen him since yesterday?”

“I have a feeling I know where they are.” Kiara replied.

“They?” Shani asked.

Day after day, Chaka and Bianca would wander the Pridelands together, eat together, and nap together on the ledge Kiara knew they’d been spending so much time at. It was shady during the hottest afternoon, and high enough for privacy.

Nuka and Kuli decided they’d wait out the dry season before heading out on their own, and spent their days side by side as well. During the day while Vitani spent time with the Pride at Pride Rock, the two kept private in the cave they shared with her at night. Both couples were hardly ever seen unless the girls were helping bring down a meal and the guys were visited by their mothers.

The dry season passed, as the rain began to fall from the grace of the Great Kings. Chaka had roared his announcement that he was once again the Future King of the Pridelands, and all disputes regarding the throne had been settled. With Kuli and his mother by his side, Nuka was once again ready to leave the Pridelands and restart a Pride of his own.

He thanked his Uncle Kovu again for allowing him to stay until the river began to rise. He turned to his older cousin Shani, and nuzzled her goodbye, before turning to Chaka. “You will make a great king, Chaka.” He said. Chaka smiled with dignity. “Thank you, cousin. I’m just glad I didn’t have to fight you for it.” He replied with a small laugh. Nuka chuckled, while Vitani rolled her eyes once again. “Come on Nuka. Let’s go before it begins to rain again.” She called. Kuli wandered over to Chaka to say her final goodbyes as Nuka turned towards his impatient mother. “Goodbye Chaka, I’m glad I met you.” She said. Chaka felt his face turn warm. “Goodbye Kuli” he muttered, suddenly feeling shy. Kuli leaned over and licked Chaka on the cheek before turning to head out with Nuka. Now his cheek felt really warm, as he watched the three of them walked into the distance towards the borders of the Pridelands until they were gone.

Months passed. The wet season came and went. Shanis’ hunting skills improved to make her the highest ranked huntress of the Pride, Kovu and Kiara were beginning to feel their age, and Chaka and Bianca were married with the blessing of the local Shaman, Nefu.

It was still quite dark as dawn approached slowly over the Pridelands. The lionesses of Kovu’s Pride were early to rise to take advantage of the darkness for the mornings’ hunt. A large herd of gazelle could be seen in the distance from the top ledge of Pride Rock, and Shani lead her pride sisters with Kiara towards them. Chaka and Bianca slept soundly on their ledge, while Kovu shook out his mane and stretched when the first light began to hit Pride Rock.

He slowly made his way down the Savannah to begin his morning patrol of the northern borders. The dawn hadn’t spread over the Pridelands completely, and the borders were still dark with the sound of crickets. Kovu sniffed the air as he rubbed against a tree, and became disturbed; Hyenas. He cautiously looked around, but could see nothing. “I should have gotten a majordomo like Simba had suggested.” Kovu thought to himself. He carried on his way down the borders of his lands with caution.

They watched him turn away and slowly continued to follow the king. They knew they had to make their move before the light gave them away. With a smile from the matriarch, the clan jumped out from the bushes and surrounded Kovu. He bared his teeth and claws, and the hyenas laughed.

“That was a pretty neat trick you did back when you showed up in the Elephant Graveyard, lion.” One hyena cackled. Kovu didn’t understand what they were talking about and just growled. “You idiot, I told you there were no tricks, no ghost!” The matriarch snarled.

“Ghost?” Kovu snickered. The hyena’s laughed nervously as they continued to circle him.

“Those that fled thought you’re daddy’s ghost was out to haunt them.” She said. Kovu didn’t have to ask to know who they were talking about, even though Scar wasn’t his father but a wide misconception spread throughout the Savannah.

Kovu tried to consider his options, which he realized weren’t many. He was far from Pride Rock where Chaka and Bianca were probably still sound asleep, and he didn’t know where his Pride was hunting this morning. And at his age without backup, he knew he wouldn’t be able to hold off the hyenas very long.

“You’re time is up as king, Kovu.” And all at once, the clan attacked.

Shani was about to move in on a large gazelle when suddenly a long roar echoed across the plains. The group of lioness’s raised their heads above the grass and the gazelle herd began to run.

“Kovu...” Kiara whispered.

“Mom, was that Dad?” Shani asked. The other Pride sisters looked around concerned. “Come on girls!” Kiara shouted as they ran towards the sound of Kovu’s roars of agony.

Whew! Lots of story to catch up on! I couldn't stop writing!

For this pic, I used a lot of reference from screenshots to get the pose just right, as you might be able to tell. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out though.
