“My entire life, I have sat at home on grandma’s couch to watch the derby. I would study every horse’s pedigree, I would drive out to the track and watch them work. The Derby has always been apart of my life. For everyone else it was always the Superbowl or the NBA playoffs, but for me it has always been the Derby. So now, getting to listen to the TV and radio and hearing my horse’s name being talked about, it’s something that really humbles you.” Matthew explained to a news reporter that had come out to do a segment on Delta for NBC and various other networks. Every Derby runner was getting some media attention, so of course father had spent the past month cleaning the farm up. Getting every brick and stone power washed, all the grass and bushes trimmed perfectly. Mother cleaned the entire house from top to bottom. Just like she would when guest would come over but now these were much more important guest than Matthew’s friends.
“How does the big guy feel? Does he know that something big is going on?” The young lady asked as the camera man slowly panned around the farm before landing on Delta standing out in his pasture, which Dad decided to put the star prince in the best looking field with the most sunshine and shade. Delta’s name plate was attached by the gate which was also shinny in this somewhat warm Kentucky day. Matthew chuckled a little seeing Delta toss his head up at the sudden attention as he trotted over to greet them.
“I think he knows something is going on. We’ve always spoiled him of course. He’s been our first big runner. He’s paved our path into the horse racing and sport world. Royal Commander and Gunmetal are proof of that. However, I think he’s noticed more fans coming around and giving him treats. These big metal cameras coming out around him more. More sound when he comes out of the trailer. What horse wouldn’t notice?” Matthew asked as he fixed Delta’s forelock and pet the big bay.
“Are you nervous for the Derby?” She asked turning the microphone back towards him where he took a big breath and nodded.
“I am incredibly nervous. You know, we’ve ran him in other graded one races and won. So that first nerve of winning a graded stakes is gone. But none of them really held the same social caliber as the Kentucky Derby. The Pegasus was a huge victory. But really the Kentucky Derby is far more than just another Churchill race. It comes with so much history and love for the sport that it holds a far more special place in everyone’s hearts.” Matthew explained as Delta rubbed his soft velvet nose on the camera lens before resting his chin on Matthew’s shoulder. Both the reporter and the camera guy awed at the big bay.
“He’s a ham. When he was first running races, he was quite uh camera shy. He would turn around and put his hindquarters towards the people and camera. But as we’ve raced him more, he tends to like people more.” Matthew added as Delta snorted and got a giggle again from the camera lady.
“What is Delta’s plans for the rest of the Triple Crown races? Is he running in them?” The red haired lady asked as she pointed the microphone back at Matthew.
“Our plan is to run him in all of the Triple Crown races. Of course if he comes out of the Derby or the Preakness acting off or not like himself, we will scratch him from the Belmont. As much as we would like to be a Triple Crown winner, we care far more about this guy than those races. Our horses have always been our top priority.” Matthew answered as everyone’s heads turned towards the sound of foal whinnies as two foals were walked out towards the camera.
“And who are these cuties?” The lady asked as the two dark bay foals came to a stop near the circle grassy area. One of the foals was basically a walking replica of Delta minus the blaze being replaced with a star. The other one was a seal bay colt who was swinging his awkwardly sized hips around to get away. Delta snorted at them and tried to reach over the fence to smell them but they kept the colts at a safe distance. Both colts had four white feet and some sort of face marking on them, clearly Delta’s white was getting passed onto his foals.
“These are Delta’s first two colts. The seal bay colt is by a mare we’ve always loved which is Little Cat. She gave us a very handsome colt who is full of personality. And his half brother is by Apple Martini who we recently purchased to have here at the farm. Apple Martini is a multiple graded stakes winner so we thought she was a great mare to book to Delta. As you can see, he’s Delta’s spitting image. ” Dad answered as he held the two year colts steady while both of their ears pinned.
“Was it planned to have Delta breed so early on in his career?” She questioned before both Walsh men nodded their head.
“We wanted to test him. You never really know his fertility until you roll the dice. So we wanted to test him while he was a two year old and these are the results. We’ve recently had a lot of our neighbor breeders interested in breeding to him once his racing career is over. Both of the mares we picked have put out really good foals that are built well so we wanted to see what two top tier mares would do with a freshman sire. And we couldn’t be happier with the results. They are everything we could have hoped for in colts from him as a sire.” Matthew’s dad explained as he walked to the two year olds around to run out some of their fiery energy.
“They’ve only recently been going through their breaking so their a little weary of humans. Despite Delta’s temperament now, this is how he acted as a colt. Always an attitude problem and didn’t liked to be told to stand still. “ Matthew added as he took the dary bay colt from his father.
“A new father and a potential Kentucky Derby winner, sounds like Delta D’Oro is starting this new year off on a good hoof.” Both of the Walsh men looked over to Delta and nodded with smiles on their faces.
“Let go take that crown, Delta.” Matthew added as the bay colt took off running in the pasture.
