Matthew woke up to the sound of a few different men’s voice chatting and laughing in the living room. After pulling on a black shirt and some dark washed jeans, he walked out to see some of his uncles and his father’s friends sitting around the living room. Some of them holding coffee in their hands while others were working on some pieces of bacon. Before any of them could give him their attention, he walked down to the bathroom and freshened himself up, fearing the rath of his mother if she saw his bed head hair. While it was never his plan to live with his family for as long as he had, it was better to stay near the property and the horses. But soon he would break the ground on his own sectioned off space for his house he had worked hard towards. For now, he would sleep in his childhood bedroom a little longer.

Once cleaned up and not looking like he had just rolled out of bed, he walked into the kitchen to find his mother cleaning up from the breakfast she had made for the visiting men. Smiling sweetly when she saw her son, she pointed to the microwave for him. Inside sat a plate of still warm bacon and eggs for him. Setting the plate on the counter, he poured himself a glass of milk and began to eat.

“Dad invited some of his old Army buddies to come check out Delta. They have a special gift for him before we head out on the Triple Crown trail.” Isabella explained as she dried off another plate and picked up her own cup of orange juice. The windows above the kitchen sink were wide open as Zeus, the old black tabby tom-cat, sat perched on it. Peering out of his domain and the food inside the kitchen sink, he kept his mother company as she finished up the dishes once Matthew was done. Faint horse whines and cries drifted into the window letting Matthew know it was breakfast time.

Matthew walked out to the living room and smiled as the men started to laugh again. Despite them being from all across the states, they had all made it a special occasion to come and see the bay horse run in the Derby. Claiming they each would place a hefty bet on the bay prince but Matthew knew it was probably some deal they had come up with.

“The man of the hour! When did you come down?” Anothny asked as he caused the rest of the group to turn towards the young man and greet him.

“Just a few minutes ago. I had to eat the scraps you guys left behind.” Matthew’s snarky comment caused a few more chuckles before his father rose up and came behind the couch to join his son.

“Think you are awake enough to show them Delta? They are anxious to see the other man of the hour.” Steve asked and Matthew nodded as he pulled on his boots and grabbed the barn keys.

“Absolutely. He’s a bit of a wild card in the morning though. He has to get in his morning sprint before he calms down enough for pictures.” Matthew explained and the men nodded as they all filled out of the main house. Mother closing the door behind them with her camera in hand.

Matthew had the group stop at the fence to Delta’s main pasture that he often shared with the more calm Optimus Prime. Matthew quickled jogged in to the Alpha stable and smirked seeing Delta’s white blaze poked out and waiting to be let out. With his halter on the wall and the lead shank beside it, Matthew quickly clipped both onto the colt and unlocked the stall door as the colt shook off the hay attached to his coat. Keeping to the colt’s left, the pair walked out of the barn and Matthew smiled hearing the oohs from Dad’s friends as the morning sun lit up Delta’s coat. Despite rolling around in his stall it still had some shine to it as they paused at the gate to the pastured. Delta’s rear end swung back and forth with anticipation of running. Isabella came over to open up the gate and let her sun lead the colt to the pasture, locking it behind them. Matthew waited until Delta came to a stop before unclipping the colt. It only took a second before he turned away from Matthew and started his morning breeze. Running easily down the length of the fence and then turning to come back. Matthew made his way over to the fence to lean on as the men took pictures of the colt running. Congratulating the family on a well built colt and already discussing some of the mares they wanted to breed to him once he was retired. Delta ran another lap around the pasture, probably mostly for show, before slowly trotting over to Matthew to be shanked up again. Matthew clipped his shank to the halter and lead the colt out of the pasture and to the circle drive where the statue of Lord Walsh stood proudly. Mom and Dad were already discussing a possible Delta tribute but it would be awhile before they would actually put one in.

Bruce, Dad’s oldest friend, walked over and gently pet the colt’s blaze before one of the men brought over the gift. “We wanted to give the colt something to give a nod to his other supporters. So we got him a multicam blanket with his named stitched onto it. Your dad complained about that dingy yellow one he wore all the time so we got him a more manly one. Not that he probably cares.” Bruce chuckled as Matthew gave the lead shank to his mother to hold the colt as Matthew worked on getting the blanket on the colt. Delta stood still and nuzzled Isabella as Matthew clipped the two straps across his belly. Stepping back, Matthew smiled at the camo and turned towards the men who clapped and smiled at the colt’s new attire.
