There's only one thing I disagree with... I don't think that's 100% James, but that's just my opinion and everyone has her/his own opinion... so who am I to judge 
I personally think James Potter was a great guy. The fantastic thing about the characters in Harry Potter is that all of them are real, not perfect and have their share of flaws. In fact, up until the point that we read about Snape's memory of him being bullied by James, I'm pretty certain most of us looked at James as a good person.
And that's my biggest problem. There's literally just one chapter that discusses this bullying episode briefly, and many people jump on that alone.
1. We're talking about James Potter here - pureblood, smart, charismatic, born into an affluent family, somewhat spoilt, cosseted, who is also an extremely skilled wizard and a fantastic Quidditch player. He pretty much has everything going for him, and is the cream of the crop here. He could have been friends with those of a similar stature, but despite this, his closest friends are what you could at best say, a bunch of outcasts - Sirius, who was, simply put, shunned from the Black family, after being sorted into Gryffindor and 'disgracing' the family name, Remus, a werewolf dealing with his own set of issues, and Peter, a pretty useless wizard who would tagalong with them everywhere (all of whom he chose, and a quality that we see in Harry as well). He accepted all of them for who they were, loved them unconditionally and was fiercely loyal to them.
2. The day he found out about Lupin being a werewolf, he didn't abandon his friend, or go telling on him. Rather, he and his friends worked together to become unregistered Animagi (possibly facing expulsion from school and a sentence in Azkaban) to be able to be there for their friend and support him through it. Most people would have deserted Lupin, if not for anything, at least for safety reasons.
3. Sirius being the prankster that he was, mentioned to Snape that the secret to get past the Whomping Willow unharmed was by simply touching the knot at the bottom of the tree. Snape promptly followed what Sirius said and when James learned of this, he rushed to Snape who was nearly at the Shrieking Shack and saved him from the attack of the the vicious and untamed Lupin in werewolf form. He risked his life in doing so.
4. James (and his family) openly welcomed Sirius Black (an ostracized Black family member) into their house.
5. James also used his wealth to support Remus as he wasn't able to successfully gain employment due to him being lycanthropic.
6. Most importantly, James Potter sacrificed himself in protecting his wife and son and died to save his family. This man was extremely gallant and even defied Voldemort thrice (with Lily) while being in the Order of Phoenix.
7. Being a pureblood, he never discriminated against half-bloods/Muggleborns and married a Muggleborn himself.
There are plenty of redeeming qualities about James Potter, but many seem to focus only on the hexing and bullying episodes of James vs. Severus. Mind you, Snape was no saint, and he hexed James right back when he came across an opportune moment. But what many seem to forget is that James was a teenager, and teenagers tend to be stupid, immature and sometimes, assholes. He was a showoff, and he was trying hard to impress Lily. He also despised Snape because he was aware that he was romantically interested in Lily. But he largely picked Snape as his target because he expressed interest in the Dark Arts which James chose to stay away from.
He eventually grew out of that teenage phase and cleaned up his act by the seventh year and finally earned the respect of Lily Evans to be able to be in a romantic relationship with her.
To conclude, James was a good person. In the books, he is presented to us as a hero all throughout and later revealed to have a bullying side, to which many judge him bitterly. He was a teenager, and he reformed later, so I think we need to move on from this.
