Got up at about 2:30am to see what the weather was like. About a minute later I was in the car. Chased this storm for over 200km. This is the best from that night.

YOU have such patience I hate thunder and lightning but when the storm is far off I will sit on my front porch and attempt to catch a distinctive bolt.. anything I've gotten pales compared to this. this is AWE some

Thank you very much I'm glad you like it. Good luck with the next storm. Practice makes perfect and no tow storms are the same for camera settings, but remember the first rule in lightning photography. Stay Safe!

As low as you can get it ideally but if the bolts are a bit further away you might need to raise it a bit.

isn't that kinda tough to have a low ISO with a night shot? It killed me to work with an ISO of 400 and even 800 in digital photography I'm a fan of 1600 (I don't usually get too much noise) in indoor and night situations (I run in to so many of them. So then with a low ISO what is typically your shutter speed aprerture range combo?

Not with lightning shots because the lightning is so bright. If you have a high ISO it will generally overexpose the bolts. High ISO can be good for indoor shots when you want to "freeze" people moving around for example or if you are doing hand held shots but with lightning you should be using a tripod. As I said- every storm is different and it depends on how close you are. A good starting point is the settings used for this pic (located in the camera data to the right) and play around from there. I always leave my ISO ideally 100 to 200 and my shutter speed 15-30 seconds and only adjust my aperture if needed. Only if I run out of aperture adjustment would I raise my ISO, but then the bolts are probably so far away and faint it's not worth it anyway.

This deserves some love, for the effort you put into getting it. It's a great shot, better than anything I've managed to capture.

Thankyou so much RavenousDrake. I'm by no means an expert on lightning photography, but I had a look at the camera info on some of your captures. In my experience, I would suggest lowering your ISO and opening up your aperture a bit. But all storms are different. If your keen to learn more from a true expert I would suggest looking at Syndyne [link] He has some journal entries full of tips and tricks of the trade. Good luck with it all.

You're very welcome. My biggest problem, I think, is not being familiar with what the aperture does. I've been learning and improving as I go, but back when I took most of my lightning shots, I hardly knew anything. I added Syndyne to my watch; he's certainly got some pretty amazing stuff.

Anytime! I know lightning is not the easiest thing to get, but it's pretty awesome when you get that one in a thousand shot.
