These are the only lights I like to see on the horizon.

Please feel free to share to help spread the word about the importance of dark skies.

International Dark Sky Week starts today, and I encourage everyone to visit the Dark Sky Association web page to learn how you can take some simple steps towards reducing light pollution and reconnecting with the night sky. Please visit [link] and/or follow them on Facebook: [link]

"Dragons Breath"
Aurora Australis from Mount Buffalo National Park Australia, 17th of March, 2013
Apart from a few little timelapse sequences which I will probably release as part of a much larger timelapse project later in the year, this will be my last upload from this spectacular aurora display about three weeks ago. Bring on the next one.

I've heard from my gran that you could see the aurora australis from as far north as Gunedah but I never had the luck to see it... is there anyway to predict when there is going to be a strong one??? this is a magnificent shot as usual... brilliant in lots of meanings of that word...

CapturingTheNight In reply to wildmandrake [2013-04-17 11:37:36 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much It would take an exceptionally large solar storm to reach as far as Gunedah, but it is not unheard of. I have heard of one aurora display that was visible from Brisbane (it was possibly the same one that your Gran was talking about). I have a blog post on what I use to find out about aurora here: [link]

Oh me too, Boss, me too! I've made suggestions to the city council here about putting reflectors on the streetlights here. The reflectors focus the light downward so not as much light is projected skyward and thus wasted. Havent' heard anything back yet, but then I don't suppose they will do it anytime soon. Showing them pics from the Badlands 60 miles to the east that show the light pollution (wasted light) from the unreflected light didn't do a lot of good, but maybe a new approach is needed--calculating the COST of using twice as much light as what is needed and the ENERGY SAVINGS they would enjoy by spending a little for the reflectors. I'll have to work it out and make another run at 'em Dark skies rule!

Wonderful aurora capture, Greg

I hope you get some sort of response from your local council soon. Hopefully with increased public awareness they might get a few more people coming to them as well.

Thanks mate

Oh no, why does this one look a little blurry my friend?
The quality is still undeniably amazing, however it looks blurry on the left side in comparison to your other works, I am disappointed in the blurry...ness (as I would love to see a super sharp image like the countless others you have done) BUT your composition and everything else is always just amazing!
