How cool would it be to make decisions like: "Hmmmm..... Should we go left and visit our friends at Alpha Centauri, stopping off at the Jewel Box in the Southern Cross? or Should we go right and visit Barnards Loop, home to the Great Orion Nebula, Horsehead Nebula and Flame Nebula, on our way to our other friends at Betelgeuse?"

I'm still not well enough, that I feel like lugging my telescope out into the backyard, but a pretty much moonless, clear night is not to be wasted. So I jumped in the car and went for a little drive looking for interesting photo ops. I have had this sign in mind for a while but the way it is positioned makes it hard to currently get an interesting piece of sky in frame. I really wanted to get the centre of The Milky Way in this shot. I'll need to wait a few months for that.

The distortion in the angle of the sign is caused by the positioning of my wide angle lens used for this shot. The sign was lightpainted using a small led torch with the batteries about to run out. The glows on the horizon are light polution from distant cities. The pinkish band above the horizon is caused by smoke haze and dew in the air. I tried everything I could think of to try and get rid of it, but to no avail. It's actually growing on me. I think it makes it look a bit like the shot is taken on another planet with a different atmosphere.

Featured in this shot is the Southern Cross or Crux (top left), between the Southern Cross and the sign is the Eta Carinae Nebula. The left arrow of the sign is pointed at the Large Magellanic Cloud and further along the same line is the Small Magellanic Cloud, which are irregular satellite galaxies of our own Milky Way
I did a star trail at the same location. Feel free to tell me which one you like the best.

Hello Greg...

Great picture...
Strong composition...
well balanced light...
on sign and sky...

You could...
I would like:
to crop away the landscape on this one...
for once...!
the picture will bee more striking...
the story will bee even more cartoonish...
Make for a great CD or book cover...

I'm rambling...
I better go fave...
Greetings...
Jakob.

Beautiful. This may sound incredibly stupid but how exactly does one see such detail? is this taken through a telescope or super-powerful camera? i would love to know how these are taken and i would love to see such beauty with my own eyes one day

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CapturingTheNight In reply to Daqiq [2011-06-20 09:02:02 +0000 UTC]

Thanks I used a camera that is able to shoot at high ISO speeds without to much noise. High ISO means that the sensor is very sensitive to light, so it can pick up the faint stars in the sky. You need very dark skies (no where near a large town or city) to be able to do this. I hope you get a chance soon.

I really really wish I could see the Magellanic clouds from my location! I don't think I can even see the central bulge of the milky way! Great frames...I love them both...But like this one more because of the clouds...I am a sucker for the Magellans

Hmmmmm....can anyone else say 'house swap'. lol I would love to one day experience the aurora that you do, and I sincerely hope that you get a chance to see things from a southern perspective one day, also. My one and only trip overseas was to Canada, but way down in southern Ontario (Niagara Falls area) for my sisters wedding. I'm definately going back one day to tour the whole lot. In the mean time i'll just have your brilliant photos to dream away at, and i'll try to keep the wide field astrophotos coming for you (I do plan to photograph the magellanic clouds individually with my telescope- I'll let you know).

oh, and Thanks! Your approval means the world to me.

Hah! House swap sounds like a fine idea. I hope you have the chance to hit the more northerly latitudes...And thank you for the well wishes on my southern excursions In due time, hey...

And no problem brother, flattered you think so highly of me! In any case, you definitely have this photographers approval. Your deep sky images especially move me!

That makes two of us. Thank you for the honest feedback While I am so grateful for the DD on the trail, I tend to agree with you, that this is the stronger frame. I know there are things I could have done better on the startrail.

Oh gosh you did a wonderful job - on both! It's just that esthetically for me, the star travel version gives me that feeling of infinite depth, and to actually see an arm of the very galaxy we travel in - it's both humbling and fascinating. I never feel "small" during such moments, I feel fortunate and filled to overflowing with fascination.

I really like your star trail photo of this, but this one [for me personally] is much, much better. I love that in this you can see the very heart of our home galaxy, the very thing that gave us life. Fantastic job on both, though!

CapturingTheNight In reply to iGoBrullen [2011-06-14 08:20:48 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the honest and nice feedback While I really appreciate the DD on the trail shot, I agree with you, that this is the stronger shot of the two, if I was to choose.

A small clarification. You can't actually see the centre of the milky way in this shot. I wanted to get it in frame, but it was to much of a stretch. Check-out [link] and/or [link] if you want to see the centre on the Milky Way in some of my other shots.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

iGoBrullen In reply to CapturingTheNight [2011-06-28 07:54:13 +0000 UTC]

Also fantastic shots. And yes, I'm aware the very center isn't in the shot, but we're looking at our own galaxy as opposed to out towards M81 or the like [I can't quite recall what's where right now.]

I really envy your ability to see this, though. Now that I'm back home for the summer I can if I go into the desert a bit, but when I'm at school I'm lucky to see Alkaid or Dubhe, let alone anything like this.

If I may ask, what are you? To know your stuff the way you do, I'm curious. And impressed, much more knowledgeable than I! -bows in respect-

Well, many thanks again What am I??? My job is as a Horticulturalist at a plant nursery, but I have very keen amateur interests in photography, astronomy and geology (gemstones mainly). If I get passionate about a subject or area I really try to know as much as possible about it. My interest in astronomy came about as a bit of an experiment with my photography. I was just messing about at night with my camera, and I thought, what if I just hold down the shutter for a long time? Could I pick up some stars. By a lucky coincidence when I did just that- my camera was pointed straight at the centre of the milky way. The end result blew my mind so much, I was hooked instantly, and I wanted to digest as much as possible about what I was photographing.

iGoBrullen In reply to CapturingTheNight [2011-06-29 07:47:49 +0000 UTC]

I can really appreciate that! I would LOVE to partake in astrophotography but I don't have the resources, sadly. The astrophysics career will have to suffice for me.
That is very cool though, I am the same way when I get hooked to something. I wish you great luck on viewings in the future!
