The Trifid Nebula (catalogued as Messier 20, M20 or NGC 6514)

I keep finding myself coming back to this set of data. This image was only my third try at a proper deep sky object with my telescope. At the time I thought my original processing of the data was pretty good but now with a bit more experience I thought I would see what I could make of it now. As a comparison check out my original processing of the same data here

Thank you so much for the great feedback Astrophotography is a great hooby but it can be very expensive and without the right equipment you will just be banging your head against the wall. If you are keen to get into it, I can highly recommend joining a local astronomy group and/or getting on some astronomy forums. A resource I found invaluable when I first started is this book on CD [link]

I've been clicking back and forth on your two versions of this for a while and I think I've finally become brave enough to voice my opinion... here goes!

I've not seen a great deal of images of this particular nebula, but I think your first version is better where the pinks and purples are concerned. In this version they look a lil bit more washed out. That's likely just due to the other one being over saturated though. Though I must say, from the same set of data the amount of extra stars revealed is bloody incredible!!

Did you crop this image at all? It just seems significantly larger in the frame that I expected a lot of DSO's to be

Thank you so much for your thoughts on this repro mate I would have to agree that the colour of the first version is marginally better but I really like the extra detail I have in this one. This has not been cropped at all. This is how big this nebula appears in my telescopes field of view. Not all deep sky objects are very small.

Bloody hell! That's incredible!

The detail is worth the sacrifice in the colour department. A beautiful thing to reveal to the world.

Sure seems cleaner and less noisy to me but then I'm not a very good judge of that. I guess if i was looking to buy a print of this shot this is the version I would want Nic ework Greg

Thank you very much Mark I really value your thoughts on it. I'm learning more and more about image processing now that the bad spring/summer weather has struck here. Plenty of time to play around with old data

You've learned well and fast Greg. So many beautifull images over the past year. So happy(jealous)you had such a great run of good imaging weather. You should send this shot to Sky&Telescope.

Thanks in a big part to your helpful guidence and encouragement Mark. I don't know if any of my work is worthy of S&T just yet. Maybe one day...... I sure hope you get your fair share of imaging opportunities over the coming months.
