The Trifid Nebula (catalogued as Messier 20 or M20 and as NGC 6514)

This is not a new image as such. I have been getting some good advice on what settings to employ in the stacking program I use, so I decided to revisit my Trifid Nebula images. I restacked them with new settings and reprocessed the result. Pretty happy with how it looks now so I thought I would share a cropped image of the main nebula region.

I really like the enhanced contrast since it brings up the faintest stars and some of the delicate structure in the whole nebula. Β

Fascinating, you captured a nebula with a mere camera?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CapturingTheNight In reply to Nils-Iver [2012-02-29 08:54:07 +0000 UTC]

Thank you Not just the camera though. The real key to this shot is the telescope attached to the camera and the computerised mount and guiding system countering the rotation of the earth. Check out [link] No "mere" camera.

Thank you so much Jon I'm glad you like it. Sometimes I wonder why I spend hours outside in the cold and dark, shooting frame after frame, to then produce just one picture. But when it all comes together in a shot like this and people like yourself give me great feedback, it is so worth it.

Nebula are some of the most fascinating photographs of the sky. You did well on this one. The colours come through very nicely giving this one a look like two flowers opening in the sky.

It looks like the leftovers of two supernovas who collide rather than a nebual.

Could be? The dust from star forming nebula like this has to come from somewhere. I'm trying to learn a bit about what I photograph, but most of the time I'm flat out trying to learn how to photograph them

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DanielHeydecke In reply to CapturingTheNight [2011-08-14 08:49:39 +0000 UTC]

Well, I can only use Wikipedia and BBC for educating myself. I once read that nebulas of Supernovas consist of mostly heavy elements. A cloud made out of iron-particles...I can't even imagine what it would look like from up-close!

BTW: Are you still on Shadowness? For some odd reason it doesn't seem to work properly anmore, at least not when I'm using it.

CapturingTheNight In reply to DanielHeydecke [2011-08-14 18:48:34 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'm still there. I uploaded two shots yesterday but before that I didn't do much on there for a while. I have noticed that the general activity has slowed a lot, but as I said I put that down to me not being really active. ?????????? Works fine for me when I'm on.

DanielHeydecke In reply to CapturingTheNight [2011-08-14 20:37:03 +0000 UTC]

Well, the last two photos I uploaded weren't even noticed at all. They don't even show up in the "What's new" folder.
