Thanks so much for the kind words! This took me anywhere between 15 and 20 hours, I didn't really track it.
I haven't used tutorials in a long while so I can't really recommend any, but I can recommend the book "Color & Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter" by James Gurney, as well as ctrlpaint.com for very good instructional videos

Absolutely love it! The lighting inside the wings and inside the ear, the detail on the talons.. So lovely.
I wonder how big the original is in pixels? And do you start out small or big?

I start out small, with quick and rough composition sketches. Then I let the client choose one and add color to it when it's still small to get a good idea of what I want to do. Once I have that figured out I scale up the image, in this case to 4000 pixels wide.
