It is a good improvement, I would say that everything is better in the after picture which is sweet. Of course, there are still ways for you to improve, but you seem to see this yourself so I'm not gonna nag.
The only thing that stood out to me is the background in the after picture, I would skip the white (it pokes my eye in an uncomfortable way). I would also try to go for darker (sadder) colors to reflect how this character is feeling. Maybe some nice but still easy effects to make it dramatic?
I took an advice to heart a long time ago: Never start out with a white background. It would be hard for me to explain this since English isn't my first language but you can always search for "Why you shouldn't paint with a white background" on YouTube and you will find it. But I can say this; I'm able to draw for longer with a grey background. Not as tiring for your eyes.
All and all, great improvement. Facial expression is nice, different from the original, but nice none the less.
