That may be the best usage of that palette ever.

Been working on this one but it looks much more NES than Spectrum now.

I never used a Spectrum, but this looks like once one accepts the limitation regarding 8*8 blocks, it could actually look better than the Amstrad CPC: Mode 1's pixel size with more colors!
Also, this allows some neat tricks: I remember reading that for one game, the developers smuggled some code/data in "unused" parts of the screen to compensate for the machine's low memory.

I dunno. The CPC may have only 4 colors in this same resolution but it can use them anywhere it likes. Check this other game shot I made using CPC's Mode 1 [link] Since I can use the colors anywhere and not have to worry about 8x8 limits I can give things more shape and depth which I prefer than the basic colors of the Spectrum. Anyways it doesn't matter...I've changed this game to NES specs. I may upload a pic soon of it. I'm much happier with the way it looks now.

I know mode 1 can be really beautiful. My favourite CPC game was in mode 1 (Prohibition), as well as the best CPC pictures I've seen from these days (the Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja intro picture).

Yeah I like some Mode 1 stuff but I love some Mode 0 stuff too. I think it depends on the game style and atmosphere required really.

thanks. I'm the opposite. I really dislike the C64 palette though impressed with some of the stuff people manage to do with it. I just find it far too low saturated and muddy and the games used to give me a headache when I was a kid.
I forgot about this project oddly enough. Cheers for reminding me.

Always the same problem for me too:
Always hesitating in between a not too complex game project or an ambitious one that I always end up abandonning, but man... HERO:CF looks FANTASTIC. Reminding me so well of the bitmap brothers godly games. Try maybe to release a short basic demo just to get motivating feedback from people ? Dunno...

Not sure if you posted this on PJ or not. Brilliant.

heya. no i never posted it on PJ cos I just didn't think it was good enough. When I post on PJ I feel like it's got to be a certain quality which this isn't and wasn't meant to be having been just a quick mock up thing for a game idea. Come to think of it I don't think I've submitted anything on PJ in a very long time.
Thanks for the compliment on it.

ALL GAMES SHOULD COME ON CASSETTE TAPES AGAIN!!!
they're awesome. Clunk, whiiir, clunk, ok rewinded, press play and run... wheeeeeeeWOOOOOeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiwwwwwhheooeoeeeeeeeeee...
Hm, though it took like 5 mins to load up a game meant for 64k computers and such. How long would it take to load up a PS3 game if it was on cassette tape instead of blu ray? And how many tapes would be needed? hmmmm...

Carnivius In reply to CyberDrone [2010-07-13 13:33:16 +0000 UTC]
yeah the Amstrads had the most reliable tape decks (built in unlike the Spectrum and C64), they didn't care what volume you loaded it (my parents were thankful for that, was bad enough they put up with the noise from the clicky joysticks) and yeah they often loaded in about 3 or 5 minutes plus some of the bigger ones needed to load a bit more after every level. They always worked (unless it was a totally crap tape to begin with). The longest loading game I had was Sultan's Maze which took 17 minutes to load. It was really crap though so it never got much play thankfully.

Thanks. Yeah this is sorta british 8 bit. Spectrum/Amstrad era. Plenty 80's japanese love about with capcom doing Mega Man games in NES style for example. Just thought the old british stuff needs to make a comeback too cos I love the atmosphere brought on by the simplicity of the graphics.

i didn't grow up in the eighties, so i might not appreciate it as much as i should be. but i think its ok, i think from the bottom of the peice up to the blue background is good. it has the gray candles and so on. but from that point is were i stop appreciating it.
nice work!

thanks. and goddamn it's been a long time since I've had to try defining shapes without allowing myself to use different tones to give the impression of curves and details and such. And I had to hold myself back from overcomplicating things like I usually do especially with tiling. My main two game projects have far more complex tiling than this, which looks nice but it's so tedious to do the level layouts.

Carnivius In reply to JamesMorrow07 [2010-07-11 18:34:31 +0000 UTC]
it's actually the Amstrad CPC palette cos the dark colors in the Spectrum palette are still quite bright but it's used here in a Spectrum style because I wanted to just use 1 color per object.
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
Carnivius In reply to JamesMorrow07 [2010-07-11 18:40:31 +0000 UTC]
yeah the CPC palette comes out as having a mid range value of 127 which is right in the middle of 0-255. The Spectrum palette's mid value is 192 it seems so it's dark blue for example is 0,0,192 which is too bright really. However since every object is one color here I could make the game with pure white graphics for everything and have Game Maker color things in itself using a preset range of values and I can swap the values around during the game itself so it can have the 'true' spectrum color mode I suppose. It's easy to do.
