What a gorgeous lion
I wondered if this might be the one from Orana Park for a moment, but then I remembered that you lived in Auckland, and looking at the date, he would have died by then So sad, for him to have passed away. He was so majestic and one of my favorite animals whenever I visited.

Where do you go to take your wildlife photos, can I ask? I'm guessing Auckland Zoo?

A lot of places for wildlife.

Rotorua have a lion park, so some have been there. Auckland Zoo is closest and I go there several times per year. Zion wildlife Gardens in Whangarei (The Lion Man), i have been once - that is where I got the white tiger cubs) Taronga Zoo when I'm in Sydney. I've also been to some of hte zoo's in North Amercia and so the occasional image is from there too.

One of these days I'll get to Africa

Ah, thankyou
I've been to some of those places, but not Zion wildlife gardens - I've heard about it and it sounds fantastic, but it stinks to live in the South Island. Although I must say, Willowbank Reserve is wonderful, and the Antarctic centre has some great opportunities for penguins.
Could I bother you with another question, quickly? What kind of camera do you use?
I've always been a traditional and digital artist, but lately I've really gotten into photography. Not that abstract crap they try to make us do at school, (no offence intended to abstract artists. I have no problem with it normally, but when they force us to do it in our photography, it really pisses me off) but real, beautiful, clear photographs like you take.

I know what you mean. Africa is a place I can only dream about right now, but I know that when the opportunity comes, I will jump at the chance to visit wild animals in their natural habitats. Zoos and wildlife parks just aren't the same, they don't give you that magical, breathtaking feeling that you get when you see a wild animal in their natural habitat.

South Island is a photogarphers dream. Those wonderful landscapes and amazing lighting. I'm jealous you are there and I'm up here where there's too many people, and way too much urban landscapes.

I started with a canon powershot pro1, before the digital SLR's came out. It was fantastic for landscapes, but for wildlife images, which I love taking, I found it frustrating, so I soon moved onto the Canon 20D. I bought one lens which came with the camera (18-55), but use my 75-300mm that I used to have with my flm camera for the bird/wildlife shots.

I have taken far too many phtos iwth it and now am thinking I might move up to the 40D Just need to make some money to buy it

Cheers

Aah, fair enough ^_^ But for wildlife, there aren't that many opportunities. Or at least, there aren't for a high school student without a car >.<

Ooh, thanks for the information

tehre's alwas that big cat that apparently is around according to the myth in the SI - a jaguar in the wild I believe. You could make it your mission to find it and photograph it

Haha!! True, I forgot about that.
So far I can't say that I've spotted it but I'll keep an eye out ;D
I have come across some truly beautiful scenes just around the area where I live, I love going out for hikes and such My only regret is that I won't be doing anything like that soon, not if the rain keeps going. I swear, I thought for a while that our street was going to flood and I totally freaked out xD

yeah - like comics - they don't look fierce at all. I got to cuddle the little white tiger cub, except that he wasn't so little, very feisty, and bit the first thing he saw sticking out - my boob. He drew a bit of blood, so I belong to the 'bitten on the boob by a white tiger' club. And I'm very proud of it

We have a Zoo - a pretty good one at that too. Auckland Zoo is one of the best in the world - and there's no obvious cages - the environment is as close to the real thing as possible with moats and trees and glass partitions!!

Zoo's are great places for wildlife photography, if you cannot get out into the wilds of Africa or other places. There are some tricks though. Try to get an angle where you won't have a background of chicken wire - this way it looks like you've taken the photo in the wild, and not at a zoo. If you can't avoid wire, use a zoom so the background will be blurred, and blur it even more in photoshop later. Try going in early morning, or last hour of daylight - this way the animals will more likely be awake, as if it's too hot- they'll sleep. Take note when the animals are about to be fed, and go to those animals an hour beforehand. They'll be hungry, so they'll be playing up, and you're more likely to get some candid action interesting shots, than the ones where the animal is just lying there asleep!

Hope this helps.

yes, someone else said he looked like in pain - but I think he's just sleepy. Just prior to going to sleep he had three playful cubs all over him - and you know how tiresome toddlers can be sometimes LOL!!

that line the rocks form is quite cool, keeps me focussed on the lion for some reason.

To me it looks like he is in pain more than just being lazy

We had a zoo trip at night. So the photo was taken on long exposure just before complete darkness. If he had moved - it wouldn't have worked - but he just lay there, completely utterly contented.

thanks for the fave
