Description Surfers at Whangapoua Beach. HDR

At the same time this was taken, a plane spotter captured an image of 40 sharks in knee deep water at the next beach along, and some at Whangapoua as well. You can read the story behind tihs photo here...

There's a link in that blog that will take you to the photo of 40 sharks. Enjoy

Great picture and I very much like the article on your blog. Shows once again that sharks are harmless, misunderstood and utterly beautiful creatures. I was spearfishing and freediving a lot when I was in NZ and I never had any bad occurences, allthough spearfishing is an activity likely to cause problems with sharks. I was reminded of an article I once read about Daytona Beach in Florida where every year during spring break there are as many sharks in the water as there are swimmers - and hardly anything ever happens.

Yeah - Glady you enjoyed the blog too. Still - I'm wary about sharks - as I said I do have a phobia to them. I got rid of my phobia for spiders with my macro lenss - i wonder if i can do the same for sharks and macro lenses??

Cheers
Robyn

I bet underwater photography would do the job. It's just a bit too expensive to do for therapeutic reasons.
But maybe you should take some divelessons. I know some diveschools in Auckland, I could give you the adresses. If that's OK with your implant. Getting to know what it looks like down there will take away the misteriousness. You'll find out that sharks are just astonishingly beautifull animals and not murderous creatures lurking in the dark, waiting to attack blondes in swinsuits.

I love snorkelling but feel claustrophobic underwater. I also have problems with equalising ears, so I don't think diving would be right for me. I'll stick to snorkelling, swimming with dolphins and orcas and boogie boarding

Snorkeling with orcas?????
You mean in the ocean? Not in a tank?
Now there's something I haven't done before!
How can you possibly be afraid of sharks when youre playing with orcas? Orcas have sharks for breakfast.

carterr In reply to Zyklotrop [2008-02-10 20:20:18 +0000 UTC]

yep - in the ocean. Orcas may have sharks for breakfast but they leave humans alone. they're intelligent animals. What actually happened is that we were looking for dolphinss to swim with, all ready to go overboard etc.. and we came across two orcas instead. This is up in the bay of islands. So we dived in for a closer look

"Oh s**t! There's a tiger shark under me.." I used to live in California and body surfed at all of the big places. I was at Bolsa Chica one afternoon and a 15 -foot long shark decided to bump my board to see if it was edible... I've seen bull sharks glide right under me..... The only thing that's actually bitten me were bluefish!

Great shot! Wonderful colors and detail. Is it a single frame HDR?

Read the blog. I want to buy your father's house and move there for 15 years too! It will fit in nicely with the other dozen places that I want to live. Need to buy more lottery tickets.
