I know the feeling. I've wanted an otter for a pet ever since I read Okee; the Story of an Otter in the House by Dorothy Gross Wisbeski. I highly recommend it, or either of the other two books she wrote, to anyone with similar urges. It's out-of-print, I believe, but may be in libraries. It's isn't really a kid's book, but it's written in a style youngsters can understand, so it may be in the children's section.

Not being able to have an otter, I eventually got ferrets, which are basically a smaller, drier, less smelly version, but with the same big personalities and playful, go-go-go attitudes. I highly recommend them, too, although I'm aware that people overseas tend to keep ferrets in outdoor hutches, which totally defeats the purpose, in my view. (Unless you're keeping them for hunting.) They lose their socialization when you do that, and then people complain that they nip.

we have neither here in NZ, I think i've seen ferrets once before but not for ages.

Yeah, I know your government has gotten very leery of allowing non-native species into the country, now that the damage has been done. Ironically, ferrets are traditionally used to hunt rabbits, because they can go down the burrows and get them.

we need them then - we have another rabbit explosion problem down south

Yeah, without predators, that's bound to happen.

I would think foxes, and/or coyotes, rather than wolves. Wolves tend to go for larger prey, including livestock. But ferrets might be even better, because they can get the babies in the nest, before they've had a chance to make more bunnies.

they're ruining the countryside - rabbit holes everywhere - perhaps we need to bring in wolves?
