Description
It was a cold winter morning, and your parents were away for the week, leaving you at home alone. You were very grown up for a child your age, and your grandmother lived in a cottage next to yours, so you could take care of yourself.
You were in your way home from buying some groceries for your grandmother when you spotted a lone figure wrapped up in a blanket on the side of the road.
You rushed over to see who it was.
A pair of yellow eyes glared at you from under a spotted fur hat. "What are you doing?"
You were startled. The person speaking was a boy only a bit older than yourself, with large sunken eyes and a terrible, angry expression. His nose was running and he was shivering.
"Are you o-okay?" You cried, shivering as well. You could only imagine how he felt.
The boy coughed, and looked taken aback by the question. He didn't reply, and just glared.
You gently reached out a hand and touched his forehead. It was very warm. "...you have one of those fevers!" You exclaimed.
The boy winced and pulled backwards, as if your touch hurt him. "Run away and scream, then!" He growled.
You tilted your head to one side and giggled. "Why am I gonna do that?"
The boy, shocked, opened his mouth to reply when a man's voice said:
"Law! I thought I lost you--ouch!"
You spun around to see a man who had tripped over some loose gravel and fallen down in a pile of feathers, which turned out to be his cape.
"You idiot that better have hurt!" Yelled the boy, standing up and kicking the man in the shoulder.
"Don't hit a man while he's down!" Whined the man, sitting up and rubbing his shoulder. He had on a strange red hat, or hood, and his face had on red makeup.
"Are you guys from a circus?" You asked, examining the man and the boy.
The man started to laugh, and he patted you on the head. "No, sweetie...I'm Corazon, and this little player is Law."
"The hell are you talkin about?" The boy Law grumbled.
Corazon laughed. "Oh man...you sure look cold little guy..." He said, his laughter dying into a concerned tone.
"My house is warm!" You exclaimed. "I live in that house over there and--"
Corazon chuckled. "I don't think your parents would want us there because..."
You smiled. "Oh they wouldn't mind...they aren't home right now." You grabbed Law's cold hand and started to drag him towards your cottage.
"Y-you are too stupid for your own good," Law mumbled at you.
Once inside, both Law and Corazon huddled next to the small fire in the wooden stove.
"I'm going to bring this to my grandma.. I'll be right back," you said.
You came back shortly with a box in your arms.
"What's that?" Asked Corazon. Law was huddled in the corner, wrapped in his thin blanket.
"Tea," you replied. "I got some for you...if you want some."
Corazon nodded and smiled. He reached out a hand and pulled Law's fur hat off of his head, revealing the boy's short messy dark blue hair. " You want some tea?"
Law turned around. His expression wasn't as harsh as the first time he had looked at you. But what was even more noticeable was the white blotches on his tan skin...like some sort of rash.
"Why does your skin look like that?" You asked as you started to heat up water. It was a very innocent question that any curious child would have asked.
Law was again taken aback by your words. Corazon spoke for him. "It is a genetic thing," he said, waving his hand as if brushing what he said aside.
"Oh," you said, getting out three teacups. As the tea was brewing, you went and got a blanket from your bed and put it around Law. "You look really cold," you said as you sat down next to him.
Law sneezed and looked at the floor.
"I think your skin looks cute and not weird," you said, reaching out your hand to try and touch his cheek.
Law swatted your hand away. "What's the deal you weirdo?" He snapped.
You were startled, and your feelings were hurt. You stood up and poured out tea, holding back tears.
You went and sat on your bed with your cup of tea, trying to hide your sadness.
Law noticed and came over to you. "Why are you crying?" He demanded.
You sniffed. "You're kinda...kinda a *sniff* meanie."
Law crossed his arms. "Look I don't have time for you to be crying so stop it."
*sniff*
"Cora-san! What the hell do I do??"
Corazon lit a cigarette and took a deep breath before he answered. "Apologize for being a meanie."
Law clenched his fists, took a deep breath, then said, "I'm sorry I was mean."
You looked up at him with wet eyes.
Law exhaled and ran his little fingers through his fluffy hair. "You don't deserve me to be mean because you are so...really cute..."
Corazon spurted out his tea and started laughing and choking at the same time. Law clamped his mouth shut and turned bright red. Then he corrected himself. "I meant you're really STUPID and--"
You dried your eyes and grabbed Law's shoulders. You pulled him towards you and kissed him on the cheek. "I like you," you said softly.
Suddenly, the door opened and your grandmother entered. She had a smile on her face and was holding a plate of cookies. "You must be the people my granddaughter was talking about."
You nodded. "Wanna cookie, Law? My grama makes the best cookies!"
Law snatched the cookie from your outstretched hand and shoved it in his mouth.
Corazon was munching away on a cookie as well. "Thank you maam for your kindness."
Your grandmother smiled. "Nothing brings me greater joy than feeding cold hearts and stomachs."
Corazon smiled wide...it was extremely goofy but something about it was heartwarming.
The man poked Law in the shoulder. " You aren't gonna say something?"
Law gulped down his fifth cookie and glared up at your grandmother. "Ugh...thank you old lady."
Your grandmother laughed. "What a rude little boy you are."
"Don't make me--"
Law's voice was cut off by you grabbing his arm and hugging it. "i wouldn't badmouth grama if I were you..."
Law, this time, did not flinch at your touch, and even nodded his head in understanding.
Corazon soon stood and bowed clumsily. "Thank you, madam, for your hospitality...But we really need to be on our way."
Your grandmother smiled. "Like I said, it is a pleasure."
You walked outside with the two visitors to see them off. You turned to go back inside when Law grabbed your arm and pulled you roughly towards him.
"Hey you..." he said, trying not to make eye contact with you. "Don't...don't do anything stupid and get hurt...Stupid!" His face was bright red with embarrassment.
You frowned. "You go and get not sick anymore," you said.
Law suddenly hid his face in his sleeve.
"Are you...crying?"
Law sniffed and looked at you with red eyes. "No, Stupid! Now go home..."
"Bye, Law!" You smiled, giving him a hug. "Come back again, okay? I like you...you're funny!"
Law turned around and followed Corazon without saying a word to you in reply.
"What an idiot..." he muttered to himself once they were a ways away.
The corner of his mouth turned upwards in a small, yet satisfied smile as a blush crept into his face.
"I...like you too."
