Description Model: Me (my hands, my machine, ...)
Photographer:
Manipulation: in Ps CS4, all made by me
Sewing: Me
Background: [link] I found it randomly in the internet ...

I promissed myself to do a tutorial about ruffles. The reason why I'm doing this it's to help future cosplayers or any other kind of person who has interests in sewing.

When I started cosplaying I didn't knew a thing about sewing in a machine. Everything was new to me. When I finally got my hands in a machine, I couldn't figure it out how to do such a simple thing as a ruffle. I've heard many ideas of my fellow cosplayers and this one was the most easy and fastest method, tho it's not the profissional one (so I've heard)

Hope you like it :3

P.S: My english it's not so great as you can see, any doubt just comment

better yet, if you use large stitches and make two parallel rows of stitching (around 5-8mm apart), you control the ruffle better to end up even (and not in lumps) when you sew it to the flat piece.

you can make the ruffles 1 1/2 the size of the flat piece for less fluffy ruffles.

Thank you so much for the advise! Gotta try that one but I'm afraid the gathering will be harder. You only use large stitches? You don't lower the pressure?

MisatoLx In reply to Cat-sama [2012-01-08 23:59:48 +0000 UTC]

both my machines are old, one from the 30's (pedal) and another from the 60's (electric). the newer one needs repairing and I'm not using it now, but neither can regulate the pressure. or do you mean the thread tension?
anyway, just the largest stitches the machine can do is usually enough. you can use thicker thread if you don't want it to break easily. I only change the tension according to the fabric thickness.

Cat-sama In reply to MisatoLx [2012-01-09 15:06:48 +0000 UTC]

Gosh what a typo. Yes, thread tension. Don't know what I was thinking when I wrote pressure ...

Thanks for the advise, I'll totally try it out! This tutorial just shows a simpler, yet amateur 'cause I don't have any sewing degree what so ever. It's always good that a professional like you "teaches" me how to do it right. Thank you so much :'3

well, I also don't have any kind of degree (in sewing, mind you), I learned by myself and through books, the right books. I just have more experience
anyway, I'm glad to be of some help.

Urcha-Von-Leonard [2011-08-02 08:48:54 +0000 UTC]

that my friend, is gathering. and if you use to lines, then you have a less chance of the thread breaking. Also, put the stich width at the longest/biggest

soo that means ..if I want my Ruffles 80 cm long, I have to use a farbric in a length of 160cm? riight
and ... could i also use another farbic (not tulle) or wouldnt it work as good as it would with tulle?

ouo
btw thank you ^-^
that is the easiest tut i found xD
the others are hard to understand ^-^'

I always use 3 times the length myself. makes it even more fluffy

Cat-sama In reply to JezzTheHedgehog [2011-01-21 19:09:51 +0000 UTC]

First of all, thank you for commenting ;D

It depends for what you'll use the ruffles (skirts, petticoats, arm ballons, ...).
I was making a tulle petticoat at the time that's why I inserted the double-width in the first step (cuting 80 cm, folding them making it 40 cm long). In most of the cases you don't need this step but when it comes to tulle, just for the "puff" you may need to double the necessary amount.

Doing ruffles doesn't mean, at all, that you need tulle. For example: [link] see the arm ballons that I have (I'm cosplaying beatrice)? I used ruffles to give the "puffy" look and I didn't double the orignal size of it, and as you can see it's a black normal fabric! I added like 5/7 cm, sew the ends, push it carefully and sew it again.

If you have any more questions, be free to ask :3
P.S: sorry for the bad english

i wanted them for a dress and bow in my hair. i want to make a short dress with ruffles on the end and at the arms to make it look cute >u<(without it would look to ''bitchy''). but i wanted the ruffles (for the arms and the bow) short small and delicate. can i use ur methode to make them like that?

dont worry ouo ur english is much better than mine ^-^

Cat-sama In reply to JezzTheHedgehog [2011-01-21 20:45:46 +0000 UTC]

you can use this, if i'm picturing right what you're saying, just don't double the amount then ;D. Remeber, be very carefull :S

Wish you the best and good luck with your dress ;D
