Oh yes! I know how flighty those little guys can be. When we lived in CA, we had hundreds of them coming in the warm months. Whenever we tried to take close pics, they'd be there until we were ready to shoot, then, zoom . .. disappeared into the ether. lol

WOw!! That must have been one amazing and beautiful sight - to see so many. I rarely see them, maybe one or two at a time, in the summer...

Well, we used to have 5 or 6 at a time at our feeder. But they were all over the place. Especially along the coast, around Oceanside and San Diego!

Before we had a feeder, and lived in an apartment, they used to hover outside our windows and look in. It was so weird and amusing to see our cat always perking up and just looking as these "big bugs" just appeared and disappeared out of nowhere. lol

It's hard to imagine hummingbirds as emissaries of the Randall Flagg.

catacosmosis-xo In reply to fergi111 [2008-02-04 21:08:03 +0000 UTC]

You can do it!! I got lucky with burst mode and a tripod. A remote control button doesn't hurt either - and I think these would have been better quality if I'd one of those and wasn't bumping the camera pressing the button... Also, could have had it a bit closer, as well....

fergi111 In reply to catacosmosis-xo [2008-02-05 03:00:08 +0000 UTC]

are you kidding me.. You got like a million times closer then I ever got

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

catacosmosis-xo In reply to fergi111 [2008-02-05 05:02:47 +0000 UTC]

Well, I was using a big lens... I was probably about 40 feet away from the feeder when I actually shot this. Plus, when you leave it empty for a day or so and refill it, they freak out and aren't as scared to come up, even if you're closer than they'd normally like.

Thank you - I love birds, and these are perhaps my favorite of our local species. They are so devious though - so flitty and fast! Little buggers - can't help but laugh and smile when watching them!

That is SO true! I love sitting on the steps when the babies are out and flying too with the whole family, they're such a crack up, fighting over the feeders and being so aggressive and possessive! Amazing lil buggers

Me too!! I've learned a good deal since these were shot, and I'm hoping I will be able to put that to use and get better "movement" photos - you know, that look more still! LOL Thanks so much!! Good luck with your hummingbird hunt, as well!
