Description Fluttershy, for an art trade with .

She asked if I could do it traditionally so she could have the original of it, to which I grudgingly agreed (knowing I spend far too much time on my traditional works, and unlike with digital works, I tend to feel the need to finish a certain something before quitting for the day, such as the hair or the body or whathaveyou).

EDIT: I forgot to mention I do not have a scanner at the trailer, so my choice was to either wait 'till next weekend and try to scan at my 'rents house, which would just end up being a horrible hassle... or take a picture of it and attempt to fix the darkness in Photoshop. I did the latter, with varying degrees of success. So if you're wondering why it looks odd... that's why.

I would say this took a total of about four hours, but I'm not a hundred percent sure, because I tend to space my work out over several days (or, as this picture would have it, a week).

May I say, Fluttershy's body color is IMPOSSIBLE to make with colored pencils. I have 72 Prismacolors, a full set of Prang, and various other colored pencils (including the set of some 120 Crayolas) and NOWHERE in the mix was there a good base color. I ended up mixing lilac, deco pink, and gray. And I'm still not happy with it. But it explains the horrible shading. Sigh.

The hair color came out a little too dark, the butterflies are ridiculous, and there are errors with her "cutie mark", but all-in-all I'd say I'm relatively happy with this piece, if only for having captured a happy look on the little pony photographer's face.

<3!

What do I start with? Sorry I'm SO darn late with this. I LOVE IT! LOVE LOVE LOVE!

Fluttershy is evil, the way her base color is nondescript. I have 120 Prismas, and probably wouldn't have any luck, either.

*Glares at the Fluttershy's sitting on her desk* *Feels silly*

Anyhow, I love your shading! I can't wait to frame her and put her on the wall. <3

Sorry I haven't finished my half yet. I will make it up to you, I promise! Only four hours? That's really fast! For me, it would probably take that long just to draw and ink it. ^_^;

I think the butterflies are really pretty, and I like the tiny bit of grass. Ohh, and her camera! Perhaps it is a digital one?

I like the pose you used, too. I never use it, but that's because I can't draw it right. x_x Hah! If you never noticed, I use the same poses over and over again. @_@

Loooooove it!

Oh, the Tears for Fears song mentioned above- what is it called? I know it, but can't for the life of me remember the title. ^_^;

It's fine that you're late, I realize you were busy. I just wish you'd visit us here on DA more often. I miss your uplifting presence!

Take your time on my half. Everyone else is.

And thanks for the !

As for the Tears for Fears song above, it's called "Mad World" if I remember correctly, and I'd have to agree with LittleBlackKat... the version from the Donnie Darko soundtrack is a bit better than the Tears for Fears one, if only because it captures the spooky essence of the song, whereas Tears for Fears' sounds a little... I dunno... silly at parts.

That looks -amazing- O___O *jawdrop* You have tre awesome coloring skills. And the butterflies are adorable enough to make up for any other flaws. ^.^

Hahaha, thank you. I wish you were right, but I've seen much better colored pencil artists than myself. I do try, though. Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving your kind comments, though!

P.S. That song by Tears for Fears is a good one, isn't it? Creeps me out when I listen to it alone, though.

Aww, sure, you're still very good anyway.

And yeah, it's awesome. I prefer the more recent cover of it done by Gary Jules, from the Donnie Darko soundtrack. It captures the emotion better, I think.

Ooooo, she's very pretty! I especially like the stainglass like butterfly up near her tail. The face looks so cute and wonderful and the shininess of the hair is nice too.

Let's see, constructive criticism. Her front left foot (the one with the heart) looks a bit off. I think it needs to slope off more towards the back and maybe have a bit more hoof in the front. Only other thing is that with the way the right hind leg is extended back like that, you probably wouldn't be able to see that first leg joint (arg, my horse anatomy terms escape me!).

I love her though! Keep up the good work and get job on the body color!

causticardor In reply to jenzaquinn [2006-09-18 19:25:31 +0000 UTC]

Hah, thank you so much for the help! I worked with the sketch of this picture for a while and had the exact same problem you describe with the joints. For some reason, though, when I took her back right leg's (we'll call it the 'upper knee'?) out, it looked even weirder, like there SHOULD be something there and there wasn't! And I re-did the curvature of her front left hoof maybe ten times before I just settled with what I had (I wish I could have looked up some anatomy, but compared to a horse, a pony's hoof is all fat and round and lacking in joints and whatnot, so I'm not sure if I'd have been able to get it right anyhow).

Thanks muchly for the help, though, and for stopping by!

I think that colour works remarkably well for her base. Must have been seven shades of hell to shade, but really, it's a great blend.

causticardor In reply to kashuarashi [2006-09-18 12:19:42 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much for the ! It was painful to shade her. The worst part was actually finding a good picture of her... in some pictures, she's bright pink. In others she's this pearly pink/purple/mostly white color (which is what I remember mine being). Even though I had four picture references on-hand, I still don't think I've nailed her. But I guess it looks okay, sigh.

Hopefully next time I'll be given something easy, like Medley or Firefly.

MamaLucia [2006-09-18 04:03:54 +0000 UTC]

The shading is NOT horrible, the butterflies are NOT ridiculous, the hair is NOT too dark, and she looks utterly ADORABLE. (I can't say anythng about the rump tattoo as I have never seen this particular pony.) Plus she's posed delightfully and has a lovely sweet expression. So there!

Really, sweetie, you are too hard on yourself!

I try to point out things I know I have problems with so I don't get critiques on them, since I love constructive criticism but not when it's stuff I already know I have a problem with. For instance: for fantasy butterflies, they're fine... but if I was going for any sort of realism, I was way off. Bad colors, bad coloring... I really should've used something as a reference.

Meanwhile, the hair and body colors are nearly what the original pony's colors are... but not quite. Granted, considering my wide array of colored pencils simply not having the right colors, the pony herself was a difficult one to go after, so I did a good enough job in retrospect... it's just not -right.-

And the only real problem with the rumpmark is that one of the flowers is a bit in the wrong place.

Yeah, I'm hard on myself... but if I always thought everything I did was perfect, I'd never excel!

But thank you for the kind comments, nonetheless... if I didn't have people like you to make me feel like my work was valid, I'd probably have quit long ago.

again!

Hahaha, I asked a similar question to another pony-loving friend of mine when she drew a picture... but they do it all of the time! Have you seen the cartoons? I mean, their hooves are oddly flexible - like plastic - so they can wrap around things like silly putty or something.

I guess if she somehow manages to balance on her hind legs and spin the camera down onto a tripod, then she would only really have to press the button to take the pictures.

She'd have to get a human to put film into the camera and develop the pictures, though.

Thanks for stopping by.

Oh her face is adorable! I love her shiny hair and the butterflies!. I honestly think that the shading for her body is done really well. Its certainly a break from the traditional light blue most people use.

Yeah, camera does look a little cardboardish, doesn't it. Wah! I've never been good at mechanical, inorganic stuff, and I never will be.

But, then again, as someone else posted... how's she supposed to use it anyway? If she can't use it, doesn't matter if it's real or cardboard, anyway.

mozzaratti In reply to causticardor [2006-09-18 19:58:23 +0000 UTC]

Well, I though of it more of a different direction. MLP were plastic toys often with various accessories. Some were real enough (brushes and the like), others certainly weren't. So why not a plastic camera?
But seriously, camera complaints or not, still gorgeous work.
