Description "This face
which earned
a mother's fear
and loathing...
A mask,
my first
unfeeling scrap of clothing..."

The words are from Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Phantom of the Opera, but the image derived from the original book by Gaston Leroux. In the book Erik (the Phantom) is described to look like a living corpse.

I was originally going to do an unmasked play version of the Phantom. But I got sick of hearing "The Phantom is a STRONG character, you should give him broader shoulders or something." Sure, he's got a strong personality and voice, but in the book he's skeletal. So I went with the book version.

I still need to work on drawing and shading cloth...

Very little was altered in Photoshop after I scanned it. I just made it a touch darker and that brought out the yellowishness and I left it at that.

DA needs a catagory for emotion or something....

"Masquerade...
Paper faces on parade...
Masquerade...
Hide your face,
so the world will
never find you...
Christine, I love you..."

Quoth the annoying people: "The Phantom is a STRONG character, you should give him broader shoulders or something."
They all just say that because they can't stand it when anyone draws a Phantom that doesn't look like that fatty Gerard Butler.

And on another note: this picture is wonderfully done. Poor unhappy Erik! I would love to see you draw a Webber Phantom in the same style. Ignore all those mindless "Gerry" fans and let the true Phantom Phans enjoy your work.

How about I don't, hm? You wouldn't like it, anyway. Since I'm one of those mindless, dirty "Gerry" fans. Or did you forget that the "fatty Gerry" version IS a Webber version?

An accurate Leroux pic ! It gets rarer with that fucking ALW movie.

Thanks for drawing it !

That's the Erik I see in the book . Such a well-done presentation, I love all the textures and fine line work.

Hey! I recognize your icon! I commented on some of your stuff on Sheezy Art (I'm Sandpuppeteer).

I could have done so many things different/better with this. That is...if I'd had the skills when I drew this. It was done a year ago, almost to the day.

God, he looks like a little kid. >.<

Hooray! One can always see the things they could have done, but keep in mind how fantastic it is without any of it .

Wow...A very accurate and heartbreaking depiction of Erik. I just finished reading both "The Phantom of the Opera" and it's unofficial prequel "Phantom".
I've seen pretty many depictions of Erik on DA from the ALW version to a mix of the ALW version and the Leroux(with Erik looking pretty much normal, sans a nose). But I have to say that I like how you kept with the nature of the book. It makes you understand why people feared him and yet also makes you feel pity. The shading is great, you really give great detail to his skin and clothes. You did such a wonderful job on this! I must fav!

(Also during the ending of the book/musical; I think he is supposed to be around 50 years old...I got that from "Phantom", I would really recommend reading it)

Please excuse my ignorance. ^_^ I'd gotten my two Phantom pictures switched around. For some bizarre reason I thought you were commenting on "All I Ask Of You" which is a color one based somewhat on the ALW's version. So...yeah...ignore that part about looking back in my gallery. I'm not entirely with it today.

Thanks. I wish I got more comments like this. Hell, I wish I could LEAVE comments like this.

I prefer the Leroux version above all. I've met people who can't stand the Leroux version of Phantom. Which doesn't make much sense, since it's the original and all. I've also talk to people who thought Leroux was Raoul, so...yeah.

If you look farther back in my gallery, you'll find a pencil drawing of Leroux's Erik, looking very skeletal. I put a lot of work into that one, as well.

I've read half of "Phantom" and I liked it a lot, until it got to the part about the Opium. I don't put much stock into the details of that book. After all, it is unofficial, and therefore little more than glorified fan fiction. I did, however, love it until he started romping around Persia. Like when he was a kid. In fact, in my scraps section, if it's still there, I have one or two sketches of him as a kid.

He's supposed to be that way...all skeletal and weird lookin'. ^_^ Also...I did his head, THEN his body, so piecing it like that never works well...

I really like the detail in the face and the hands. For some reason, it reminds me of the way they portrayed Erik in the Hungarian production of the ALW play... I really like this picture -- it's haunting and well-composed, I think.

Wonderful- very like the Phantom in the book, perhaps in the sickly state he appeared in at the end when he visited the Persian...

*nods* It is a mix between the final conversation between the Persian and Erik, and the final song on the CDs, which I quoted and got the title from.

Thanks for the Fave, by the way. ^_^

celticangel In reply to Chibi-Narusegawa [2004-01-09 19:08:48 +0000 UTC]

It's far from a sketch. A sketch is the equivilent of jotting down an idea. I doubt I could get any closer to a finished drawing if I tried (unless I wanted to add a background)...

Chibi-Narusegawa In reply to celticangel [2004-01-09 21:10:30 +0000 UTC]

Well, I just call pencil drawings sketches for some reason and I'm sorry if it had offended you in any way. ^^ You could do a bg if you really felt up to it, but really your drawing looks soo good. ^^

geoohki [2004-01-09 06:00:19 +0000 UTC]

very good penciling Sara-chan. The expression and the details on his skin and the clothing make him look really frail and sad. Sort of in a Gollum kind of way almost?
I also think the pencil and the lack of color makes it seem more to the age in wich it's supposed to be you know? Black and white, sketches were really big back then. I dunno just my first impression. I like it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

celticangel In reply to geoohki [2004-01-09 06:06:08 +0000 UTC]

Spork made a reference to him looking like Gollum. I have no idea how old he's supposed to be. No older than middle age, I'd assume. In the book they talk about him being this genius freak child in a gypsy circus, but after that they make no reference to his age.

I had a lot of trouble with his hands...I'm not used to drawing skinny hands. Look through my drawings and you'll find mainly chubby (or "full" hands, and they're usually freakishly huge...I think that's 'cause I've got big hands (even bigger than most guys hands...)
