ARTIST'S COMMENTS

Meet Dixie and Linus, the two most adorable little Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. They are owned by my parents' friends. They love the companion of each other as well as humans

This is the first time I've properly drawn dogs, so don't be too harsh with my lack of knowledge of the canine anatomy

Thank you, glad you like them These two are drawn from photos of the actual two dogs, so they are not "stereotypical" KCS's, but rather individuals with their own looks and personalities.

Not really, no. I do look at some tutorials and how other people go about doing the same things that I try to achieve, and then I try to do it myself either by doing it their way or by coming up with my own way

You've done very well considering that you haven't drawn dogs a lot before! And the sky's colors are stunning. I love that sunset combination of yellows, blues and pinks. It looks like a very peaceful, content scene. The only thing I'd critique is the dogs' eyes look very dark to me (though that may just be my monitor). And there seems to be a large unshaded block in the middle of the right dog's head (again, probably just my monitor!).
I'm planning to attempt a realistic dog drawing one of these days myself. Haven't tried canines before, so it'll be a learning experience (as I'm sure this one was for you).

Thank you I thought I'd draw an Autumn scene which isn't the stereotypical yellow-and-red, but has more of a late Autumn feel to it since both their Birthdays are late in the year The eyes are a bit dark I suppose, but since they aren't hit with direct sunlight and sort of looking down at an angle, I find it looked a bit unrealistic when I put a bigger highlight in, so I kept it minimal instead. The head is shaded though, but very faintly Good luck with your future canine drawings!

Frithe [2010-12-06 08:29:40 +0000 UTC]

This is piece stunned me at first because not many people can capture the spirit of Cavalier so well. Saying this because I am the proud owner of two little Cavalier bundles myself - a black and tan named Church and a tricolor named Link - who are perpetually causing mischief yet their big, sorrowful eyes keep getting them out of it.

While not knowing what the dogs in question look like, the anatomy seems slightly off in that the necks seem a bit too short and the bodies a bit too robust for a Cavalier. I would also say that their eyes need to wider, more expressive in comparison to the rest of the face but, again, without knowing what the actual dogs themselves look like this is merely a careful observation. That being said, the scene and the dogs themselves are wonderful composed and implemented into the picture, flawlessly seamed together into a single piece. You put the spaniels in their natural element and that was an absolutely wonderful idea - even if Cavaliers are more lapdog than hunting dog haha. They are big lovers, not fighters, but these two are perfect in the environment in which you have placed them and that natural feeling is what makes the piece so strong. Great job and keep it up!

Happy Holidays!

Thank you, glad you enjoy it Cavaliers are so gorgeous, and I've always enjoyed watching these two, just as much as I enjoyed drawing them They are both quite robust to be honest (not like the typically skinny Cavaliers) and one of them is getting quite old aswell. Even though they may be quite different from the typical build for the breed, even my dad said he could clearly tell that it was these particular two cavaliers in the painting, and he usually can't even tell the two apart from each other So as long as I made them more individually representative rather than according to breed statistics, I'm happy ^^

Wow, yes it's about time I commented on this. I love Cavaliers and you've captured their personality so well. I don't know canine anatomy that well either, but from what I can see you've done an excellent job. The fur looks amazing and my favorite areas would have to be the longer strands like the ears, the belly, and the chest area.
The individual grass blades look very beautiful close up, and I particularly like the ones by the log on the left side. The composition works well too, and I'd say this is a wonderful birthday gift.

As someone said earlier, the yellow line running through the background is somewhat distracting. However, I don't think it's too much of a problem considering there are yellow areas in the sky and water.

These guys are just so adorable. Keep up the great work.

Sorry for the very late reply! Been so busy lately and I don't think I'll be able to get anything done until next weekend when this very time-consuming, rushed and stressy uni-project is finished Anyways, thank you so very much for your lovely words, I'm so glad you like them both I've always adored these two, so it was so much fun finally getting to draw them My parents have secretly been taking photos of them over the last year for me to use as references, so I had plenty of all the spots and characteristic appearances from all sorts of angles
