Charcoal pencils. Still trying to find my place in using the color media for portraits, or anything else. Nothing feels really comfortable yet. Oh, and it's not perfect. I already know.Related content

Your getting there Carliss! Like Catlucker said you build up layers of color and those little empty spaces on the paper will fill in as you add more layers! The rough texture of the paper helps to grab or hold the color. Don't give up!

No I don't think its stupid at all! I think everyone wants to try different things, but once we give it a try we don't always care for it! I think that's normal!

The first impression is really good. Bright and clean.
The detail is good. And you did successfully highlight part and shadow part. Very beautiful. I can recognize your style easily.

That's exactly how my stuff looks on the first layer. I might add some skin color highlights and some browns, blues, grays to get shadows. I'll work in a little color pencil details on eyes and lips. Normally I work in the eyebrows like hair with color pencil and work deeper with pastels. But Michael looks like he used eyebrow pencil.

Take your time and go lightly first. You can even work like normal adding shadows, mid tone, and highlights at the same (same layer) then blend slowly and carefully not to lose those tones.

It's really thin, but strangely it'll hold up. It's made of cotton, btw!
Seriously, at first I though I was grinding holes in it. But as time went by, I learned how to push the paper to its limit.
