Barbosa (BRA) vs. Sherlock (GBR)
Phoebe Sherlock was the only contestant in the division to have fought in both the UK’s Continental and Regional qualifying events, and the only contestant to have lost, a decision to an opponent from Sweden in the Continental (again, not Hellvig). She made up for it, however, with a key win vs India to get the UK to the Games.
On the other end, Brazil was one of those talent rich nations that could afford to send a B-team to the qualifier. Brazil, the United States, and Japan were the only three nations to successfully qualify all four men’s and all four women’s MMA divisions.
Unlike the USA and Japan, however, the process of selecting Tandara Barbosa as its 63 kg representative was a messy one. All three Continental participants had thrown their names into the ring so to speak, with all three having legitimate claims and equally impressive records.
Ultimately, it pays to have friends in high places, which is how Tandara wound up with the nomination. She was, though, just as skilled and deserving, with an impressive 19-3 overall record of competition in Brazilian, American, and Asian promotions.
