Tales of the Demonic wars - part 1 - the Slave Traders
Next
-----------------------------
The day was almost over and I had finished my work in the fields. I was enjoying a small rest before heading back home as I saw an old woman approaching. She walked slowly, with great pain, and wore a hood. When she reached me, she sat next to me and asked:
“Would you mind listening to an old wanderer, young girl?”
“Why not.”
I enjoyed hearing stories of faraway places. They allowed me to escape the dullness of my everyday life.
“Have you heard the tale of Arlen?” she asked
“She was the master of the Slave Traders, right? Before Illina?” That was ages ago, I wasn't even born.
The old storyteller took a deep breath and started:
“In 465, slavery was banned in the kingdom. Several people refused and became outlaws, continuing their business. They were weak, divided, isolated, until Cleon and Sira united them inside the Slave Traders, most commonly referred to as Traders. That was in 487. Sira became the first master of the Traders. The title was inherited from parent to child for more than two hundred years. In 704, a large military operation know as the Purge destroyed the Traders. As she was heir to the Traders, Arlen was captured, at just 13, and kept imprisoned until the Purge was complete. Her parents were executed.”
As she recounted Arlen's story, she never looked at me. She paused and then continued:
“Her heart burned for revenge. During her time in prison, she had the snake tattooed around her eye. Just as a snake, she would wait and strike a deadly blow to those who destroyed her life. When she was released in 713, aged 22, her hatred drove her on. She killed the commander of the Purge, rebuilt the Traders and made them stronger than ever. The tattooed snake became a symbol of respect, and fear.”
“Her life changed the day she received a serious leg wound during a raid, as Arlen was born with a rare disease: an immunity to magic. Healers were powerless to fix her wounds, and she would keep a lame leg for the rest of her life. Ambitious Traders plotted to take advantage of it and take her place. In 726, a coup ousted her from the Traders. Yet, she survived and lived as a wanderer as the Traders sent assassins after her. Even with her wound, she remained a formidable fighter and stayed alive for almost twenty years.”
“Her leg wound became more painful and she was growing weaker as time passed. One day, she didn't make it. Her body was found in a dark alley in 739, the dreaded snake encircling an eye that would never open again.”
She sighed and continued:
“Anyways, thank you for sharing this time with an old woman like me. I'll be on my way now”
As she stood up, I caught a glimpse of the eyes of the old storyteller. And of the snake around her left eye.
