Prisoners from the three sections at the Central Female Prison (the CFP) don't have much interaction between them. Occasionally, work gangs from Theft and Vice might be combined for a really big job, but the two sectors never encounter girls from the Murder section as a rule. The Murder section itself is a separate and highly secure block surrounded by high concrete walls and razor wire. Once a prisoner enters there she will spend the miserable remainder of her life there.

The prisoners of Vice section, like Theft, have it easy by contrast. They work chained to each other in gangs of twenty at often hard, but not life threatening labor. They do have a lot of rules and restrictions to follow. Violating these can lead to punishment. So it was one day when Vice chain gang number eight had just started digging a trench inside the complex. A newer prisoner, #3610, called out that they had just unearthed an electrical line. The problem was that she broke one of the rules and didn't ask the guard for permission to speak.

Often, the guards let a violation slide with a stern warning. However, a supervisor was nearby, maybe within earshot. The guard in charge of gang eight didn't want to be written up and reprimanded. She didn't want to have to march the whole gang of twenty females over to the guard station that was about 1,500 feet away just so a punishment mask could be locked on #3610. She also didn't want to do it at the end of the day because she hoped to leave early for a friend's birthday party, and she didn't want to have to do it tomorrow morning along with everything else. The guard decided that it would be perfectly proper to just unlock #3610 from the gang since she was at the very front. The guard sent a text to the station and ordered #3610 to report there to have a mask clamped to her face and return to the gang in less than thirty minutes.

Vice prisoner #3610 hurried toward the guard station, slightly hindered by her heavy shackles. Strangely, no one, prisoner or guard alike, paid any attention to her. At an intersection she encountered a prisoner from the Murder section, #1945, who was being tormented with a forced march all around the prison grounds before her scheduled execution by hanging that evening. Like the girl from Vice, she was also unaccompanied. Of course, she probably knew if she tried to stop a swarm of guards with whips would soon be upon her, so the poor girl just struggled on. Vice prisoner #3610 let her pass, then hurried to the guard station where an officer photographed her. The guard grabbed a pig faced punishment mask and scanned a code inside. She then clamped it to #3610's face and locked it. She took another photo of the prisoner now wearing her mask. Then the guard entered a date when the mask would be removed, the minimum sentence of seven days-- although it would ultimately be nine days because that was easier for the retrieval unit. Mask affixed, #3610 ran back to her chain gang. She did not see the condemned girl again.

The whole process took seventeen minutes. Once she returned, the guard gave #3610 one swat with her rubber crop across her buttocks. Then she chained her back up with the others in number eight-- in the rear this time. They resumed digging, this time safely away from the buried wire.
