My guess is it has to do with both the .xrdb folder and .Xresources. The way I organize my colors is in the .xrdb folder and #include a specific colorscheme in my .Xresources. If you look at my .Xresources you should see what I mean. Let me know if you need more help.

I gave the Xresources file a try, no luck.  Not a big deal, I was always planning on customizing it to my liking anyhow.  Thanks for sharing!

You made some pretty configs my friend. I remember when I first got into Linux I loved all your configs. I was using Openbox back then too so I was using your themes. Lol.

I'm Glad! I tried making my configs as clean and readable as I could for that reason. 
I've been away from the whole Linux scene far too long to be honest. Might have to get me a thinkpad as well just to mess around again. Any recommendations?

Oh boy. I bought my W520 a few months ago for $200 USD on Craigslist. I love mine but I'm sure there are better options.
