Sarutobi Yamazaki is a Jounin Elite in the Shadow Ninja Clan, one of the 17 primary Shinobi groups who serves the Netherworld Empire's Imperial Royal Family.

Sarutobi was originally born Sasubo Yamanaka, a member of the Yamanaka Clan of Konoha. The members of this clan specialise in mind-related techniques which makes them experts at intelligence gathering, espionage and interrogation amongst other things. They have also displayed sensory abilities and their techniques include transferring their consciousness, reading minds and communicating telepathically. The flower symbol of this clan is the bush clover which symbolises a "positive love".

He changed his name to Sarutobi upon his graduation from the Ninja Academy, a move which the Third Hokage personally awarded him with his blessing. Sarutobi is close to his cousin Ino and while he is sent to join the Shadow Ninja Clan, he kept in contact with his biological clan over the years before he ends up serving as one of the Jounin Elite.

Sarutobi is responsible for introducing Ino to other martial arts and oversaw her mastery of Judo before she puts him through numerous joint locks, even making him tap out while using a Juji Gatame for the first time.

However, the actions of his older brother Fu Yamanaka proves to be a shattering moment for Sarutobi: Fu's willingness to become a Root Anbu and verbally attacking Shinji Ikari, who is Sarutobi's master by this stage, left him to adopts the Yamazaki name while severing his ties with his biological clan.

Sarutobi grew very bitter towards Inoichi Yamanaka for not doing anything to protect Shinji and is so furious when his young lord had his birthright stolen that Sarutobi swore to destroy his former home village and his now former Ninja clan as a way of removing the shame he is forced to endure as a result of his brother's betrayal.

However, Sarutobi abandons his otath of revenge due to seeing how his biological clan shows actual remorse for failing Shinji and seeing Inoichi openly refusing to support any further attempts to hunt Shinji down, he re-establishes contact with his clan through Ino.

He become a primary intelligence liaison between the Sixth Hokage, Kakashi Hatake, and the Crimson Phoenix following the end of the Vengeance Wars in 2021.
