Colossal Statue of Akhenaten
Painted from scratch over about 6 hours in Photoshop CS4

Went to the Tut exhibition at the AGO, and LOVED IT! If you get the chance to go, don’t miss it
This painting is based on my favourite artifact that I saw... a piece of one of 8 colossal statues of Akhenaten from a temple in Amarna. Although I’ve seen photos of these statues before, there is something totally different about standing in front of them in person. I suppose this is partly from their exceptional size! Although this piece was broken, and only included half of his body, they displayed it at what would have been its original height... so you had to crane your neck to see it when standing nearby. Amazing.
The unique style, most noticeable in the facial features and proportions, speak to the vast artistic and cultural changes which occurred during the Amarna period.
This piece truly inspired me to do some work of my own!

I used a fabulous papyrus texture, which I found here [link]

Entered in =Feline-icity 's Ancient Egypt Contest! Which can be found here: [link]

I absolutely loved this piece and your art definitely does it justice! You did his face perfectly, it looks exactly like his statue.
