Description YES! There ARE two subjects in this painting.... read on.

My entry for Cataclysm-X's contest "Couples and Duos" here [link]

I thought most folks would go with the typical lovey-dovey stuff or the "salt and pepper" or "fire and ice" pairings, so I figured I'd go a completely different way.

The female angler fish is NEVER alone. In fact, if she's ever alone, she'll die. She has a symbiotic relationship with the bioluminescent bacteria that live on her body (in the shiny, dangly thing on her head!) Without the angler fish, the bacteria would die, too. Symbiosis.... I don't think you can get any more basic a duo as that!

Thank you very much! I thought it was clever, too I didn't win, but it was fun making this painting, and it has quickly become one of my favorites. There were a few other clever entries that were really phenomenal! Unfortunately, none of the clever ones won. That's okay, I think all the artists had fun and that's all that really matters.

Aww, thanks! See? I liked the painting so much I turned it into my avatar! I swear I giggled most of the time I painted it. . . hehe. Always have the best time when I can smile or chuckle while I'm painting <3

What are you talking about? I see your gallery. You've got talent! Keep it up, keep doing it! I was a black and white artist for the longest time. I think I started with color maybe 4 years ago? I still drop back into B&W now and then.

I thought that light is a part of the fish......

U know, by looking at the title n the fish, I feel like I would like to sing.....

LOL! I was humming that song while I painted her. It seemed so appropriate. I'm glad others get the humor, heh. Thanks for the fave!

What a unique idea! I've always wanted to know how the angler fish's little light was powered.

You did a really great job with the lighting, especially with making the light diffuse through the water. It's the neatest effect ever ^^

Wow, an original and cultural artwork! I didn't know that the angler fish "light" is actually a bacteria.
Great work!

Thank you! I didn't know about the light either until I researched the fish for this painting. I like to get to know my subjects as best I can, so I always research first and learn what I can. Found a lot of cool info on them!

Creepy! Those deep-sea anglars are such interesting creatures!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CharityBecker In reply to GangsterLovin [2009-07-02 01:04:56 +0000 UTC]

Yes, they are! Did you know the male Angler is really, REALLY tiny and doesn't have a light at all? He attaches to the female and then becomes FUSED to her body.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GangsterLovin In reply to CharityBecker [2009-07-02 05:59:05 +0000 UTC]

Wow, they really are bizarre creatures! It would be so interesting to have a (female) angler for a pet! I'll bet they're really dangerous, huh?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CharityBecker In reply to GangsterLovin [2009-07-02 06:03:42 +0000 UTC]

Yeah.... and not designed to live in shallow water. They are the very deepest of sea critters. I think they'd die in a fish tank

Fro what I've read, they can be pretty heavy, but the average size isn't too much bigger than a teacup (they used a picture of a teacup for a comparison.)

GangsterLovin In reply to CharityBecker [2009-07-10 17:15:38 +0000 UTC]

I'm not surprised at all. From what I know, they're only found in the dark depths of the ocean floor.

That's really interesting, they're such fascinating little fishies.
