Description **Please full view for details!

**Update: Working on the background (which I hated) so I've trimmed this down for now. I'll replace with the new one as soon as I'm done!

The concept:

In many Pagan religions, it is believed the Great Mother, the Goddess, gives birth to the Sun God during Yule (Winter Solstice) and thus giving birth to a new year.

This is my interpretation of that event.

Thank you for looking!

Inspired by this photo (which was used as a ref. as well as inspiration!) link

Comments are welcomed, crits are not. Keep in mind I am NOT trained in any way, I've taken no classes, and I have no desire to be a professional artist. I do this for the pure enjoyment of creating beautiful things.

There are plenty of things I dislike about this piece, but I simply cannot work on it any more or I'll go nuckin' futz!

Aprox. 36 hours (Yes, I'm really that slow) with Wacom tablet, Corel Painter X, and Adobe Photoshop CS3

Haha what if the son were actually a sun? That birthing would be difficult.

Thank you for the kind works
I'm same with my pics too. Just whn i finish them i see some tiny little line or something i grab the eraser and. let's just say that my friend is always able to take my hands off the drawing before i ruin it.

It's a very beautiful and moving picture. I love the look on the Goddess' face. She is so tender and protective of her newborn child. Just touching.
I myself don't learn from anywhere about drawing and of course my style of drawing is years away from yours.
I just hi hope someday i can draw as beautiful as you.

Thank you very much for the kind comment. I'm glad others can see what I tried to put across in this drawing. I'm still fiddling with the background, and even messing around with coloring it. Of course, my art is never done.... I'm one of those people who just can't keep my hands off of my "finished" stuff. Every time I learn something new I go back to an older piece and make it better.

Never ever put down your own work, emilycorpse, and try your best not to compare yourself or your work to ANYONE else. It's great to look at other artists and see how they do what they do, but never compare yourself to them. It's always good to strive for "better" but never look at your stuff as "less-than" anyone else's! We all started somewhere and we're all still working toward whatever goal we've set for ourselves. Keep at it and you'll improve.... and most importantly, NEVER let anyone kill your love for creating!

I very touch artwork you made ^^ I just love the look on the babies face...It looks so cold but that baby just makes it so warm.

For you not havening any type of training or schooling for art...you are amazing sweetheart! I hope you keep it ip....I look at that hand you made and you really had a wonderful talent!

The background seems to be the only thing that you had some trouble with but omg you made up for it with how well you did the Goddess and child *^_^*

Awww, thanks! What a great comment. You made me blush.

Yes, I HATED doing that background. Hated it with a burning passion, lol. I had to get it done for the contest though. If I'd had more time I think I wouldn't have stressed over it so much (or ignored my dishes for so long, LOL) As much as I dislike the background, I enjoyed doing the goddess and her son very much. It's a combo of subjects near and dear to me: motherhood and the cycles of nature.

Thanks
