Description Way back in 2002, when I took the digital coloring class at SCAD taught by Durwin Talon, we did this exercise. Basically, Prof Talon had these this work sheet filled with repeating heads drawn from one of two art models. He would bring in these models and then light there heads and we would use a marker and draw the shadows. These have proven to be useful reference over the years when I've need some help creating interesting and accurate look shadows on characters faces.

Lines- Durwin Talon

Marker tones- me

P.S. if anyone else out there has done something similar to this, I encourage you to post them on DA and let me know about it so I can link to them.

Lol, yeah, he's awesome. Even though the last time I ran into him he didn't remember who I was. But that's understandable, I was in only one class he taught at SCAD around 10 years ago. How was he to know that class would lead to my career.

It's pretty awesome how the faces just, like, change... Dramatically, in the feel and sort of 'personality' in mind with different lighting. All the same expressions and persons, but so many different feelings to them.

Yanno? :V

This is pretty spiff.

No problem. If you really want to study light sources, you should do your own set of these. You learn more that way than just looking at the ones I did.

No problem, I've been thinking of setting up some more lighting studies myself. The challenge nowadays is finding the time.

lol, wish I could take complete credit for it but it was a class exercise. Unless you mean my idea of scanning them in and posting them on DA 8 years after I did this exercise is pure brilliance. That part was completely my idea.

Jayendor In reply to CharlieKirchoff [2010-01-14 00:58:44 +0000 UTC]

The part where you shaded it ;D

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CharlieKirchoff In reply to Jayendor [2010-01-14 01:00:27 +0000 UTC]

yeah... though if you saw the originals I did the shadows in orange and blue highlighters. Thats the reason I scanned it in in grayscale. The neon colors get a bit distracting.

Jayendor In reply to CharlieKirchoff [2010-01-14 01:37:39 +0000 UTC]

haha well it looks pro. You'd never guess it was neon.

As far as coloring goes, going to SCAD just taught me the bare boned basics. The most important thing that it showed me was that I had a bit of talent towards color theory and art related computer programs, which is the reason I ended up pursuing a career as a colorist.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

whoisrico In reply to CharlieKirchoff [2010-01-13 23:24:40 +0000 UTC]

Coach Talon really knows his way around color, he didn't share much of that in class?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CharlieKirchoff In reply to whoisrico [2010-01-13 23:58:21 +0000 UTC]

Well, there's only so much you can teach when it comes to color. Color theory is pretty common sense, cool colors recede, warm colors come forward, etc etc. The challenge is applying that knowledge and I think thats something you have to learn on your own.
As far as rendering goes, they just taught the Lee Loughridge way of coloring at SCAD, so mostly cut and grads with color holds. Not too complicated but I think its a great way to start. I think a lot of amateur colorists get hung up on renders and don't learn how to make their color choices pop. So starting with a simple rendering style and going from there is a good way to go. But thats just my opinion. I've gotten into heated debates about that topic before.

Shoot, I just saw you're in VA beach, I was there two weeks ago! We could have totally geeked out on coloring!

I've enjoyed this exchange sir. I think I share some of your views on color obviously.

When my wife first saw Lee's work she said, "You're really rip this guy off huh?" ouch.
