Description "We kill the lights and put on a show
It's all a lie but you'd never know."

Another assignment for Painting Drama This one was a lot of fun to paint.. but also kind of painful. It reminds me a lot of the things that i used to paint/draw in highschool, which is pretty nostalgic by now ^_^ But inevitably with that nostalgia comes the REAL feelings I experienced at that time in my life. This might sound melodramatic, but it was a depression I wasn't sure I'd be able to escape from. But luckily time passes and life moves on, and I've fought so hard throughout the years to heal myself. I can honestly say I'm in an even better place than before that hell broke loose.

Inspired by the song "Kill the lights" by The Birthday Massacre.

Again, improvment! I really like the poses and expressions! They feel very natural, maybe except her foot which seems a bit off somehow. Did you use any references?
The contrast is awesome, the white skin to the black clothes and also the realistic characters to the stylizied smoke.
I'm not sure if they're melting or starting to rot away, but it doesn't matter because it's fun for the viewer to interpetrate that themselves.
One minor detail that's bugging me, I think her ribcage ends a bit too low. Or maybe she's starting to rot on the inside already so it's falling down?
I'm glad you can turn bad experiences into something beautiful and be creative with it.

Yeah, I used me and Robin as reference It was mandatory in the course to take our own ref photos for character poses, so we've posed for every one of these painting drama pics XD hahah. but I love that approach so I'm totally gonna continue taking my own ref. I can never quite find the refs I want online anyway.

Nowadays, the bad experiences hurt a bit less, so it feels fine to process them now I'm not one of those people that think you have to suffer to make good art, but if you've already suffered.. might as well use it to my favour.

Oh, that sounds nice that you had to take your own reference pictures. ^^
I also prefer to use references, either for poses or just colors and stuff. It makes everything look so much better and natural.
I agree that it's hard to find references too, sometimes I have to mix and match different ones into one.

Good for you! ^^ Since I've been pretty down the last couple of monthes I felt it helps a little to draw my suffering and pain. Transform the ugly into something beautiful! Haha!

Haha yeah, I've actually began to enjoy the reference work too! Like shoot pose ref, googling for inspiration and researching history/mythology for settings and outfits XD
A new good habit I picked up some some PD classmates was to do studies of things in the picture i don't know how to draw yet. So basically all of the parts of the outfit of Taurus I showed you on the hangout I've first made sketches of from reference, before trying to put them together and redesign them into something fantasy-themed ^^

Oh, that's a really good idea. I do it sometimes too, but mostly not, haha. I think, as with everyting else,
when I know the rules and how stuff should look like then you can start bending it and creating your own stuff better.
It usually shows when you have based your design on someting real and it usually looks good too.
