This is a piece based on personal experience. I would call this one of those "sketches that went too far". The pose was probably the most difficult part.

On another note, good luck to all other contest entrants! This contest gave me the perfect opportunity to express myself. Win or not, I'm proud of this piece. I'll post my progress once the contest is over.

Some one introduced me to this french poem after I shared this, and I can't help but post it. It's by a poet named Saint-Denys-Garneau.
Cage d'oiseau

Je suis une cage d'oiseau
Une cage d'os
Avec un oiseau

L'oiseau dans sa cage d'os
C'est la mort qui fait son nid

Lorsque rien n'arrive
On entend froisser ses ailes

Et quand on a ri beaucoup
Si l'on cesse tout à coup
On l'entend qui roucoule
Au fond
Comme un grelot

C'est un oiseau tenu captif
La mort dans ma cage d'os

Voudrait-il pas s'envoler
Est-ce vous qui le retiendrez
Est-ce moi
Qu'est-ce que c'est

Il ne pourra s'en aller
Qu'après avoir tout mangé
Mon cœur
La source de sang
Avec la vie dedans

Il aura mon âme au bec.

Edit: My dad and I worked together to translate the poem to English. We had some disagreements but eventually came to this

Bird Cage

I am a bird cage
A bone cage
with a bird

The bird in its cage of bones
Death, making its nest

When it's quiet
We can hear it, rustling its feathers

And when we laugh a lot
If all suddenly ceases
We can hear it coo
In the background
Like a chime

It's a bird held captive
Death, in my cage of bones

If it wanted to fly away
Would you hold it back?
Would I?
What would?

It will only leave
After it's eaten it all
My heart
The blood source
Where life resides

With my soul in its beak
